More about this extension

Based on the excellent facebook notifications extension found at Β While that extension only allows you to view how many new notifications you have received, this one additionally permits you to preview them and follow their links from within the extension itself.

Please let me know of any bugs and/or feature requests in the comments. Β I’ll be monitoring them.

  1. poof says:

When clicking the icon it takes a while to open. I recommend to open the popup instantly and load in the data when ready. πŸ™‚

  2. Mahnas92 says:

    agree with Poof…
also the notifications is not in realtime-updated… how often do it update with fb?

  3. OwenCM says:

I’m not sure if you can do that really, when you open the popup I presume it also marks the items as read and would do that every time you preload :/
Nice to see my extension is useful for others to develop from though, good job πŸ™‚

  4. mg2 says:

Thanks, could you make the number in a red background like a real FB notification? πŸ™‚

  5. Armstrong says:

Nice! but why a separate extension and no an update?

  6. Z says:

I noticed that it shows hidden notifications too…
I really had a reason why i killed them, and it would be very nice if this could skip showing them πŸ™‚

  7. Armstrong says:

When there’s no notifications, when I click on the icon it would be nice that send me to the facebook homepage, like gmail or greader checkers.

  8. Kyle Corbitt says:

@poof: That would certainly be ideal, but I don’t know a good way of implementing it. It would seem that the chrome extension framework does not respect asynchronous AJAX requests, and so there is no way to fetch the data after the popup is loaded. If you could point me to an extension that successfully implements this behavior I’d be more than happy to figure out how it does it and integrate that functionality. And as OwenCM mentioned, because facebook provides no mechanism for viewing notifications without marking them as read you really can’t precache them.

@mg2: great idea, and super easy to implement. I’ll put it on my list.

@Armstrong: I considered that, but I made a design choice against it so that the behavior of the extension would more closely mimic that of the notifications button in the lower-right-hand corner of the Facebook page. That would be a good thing to put on a preferences page though, which I’ll try to add in the next version.

  9. Kyle Corbitt says:

Oh, and the reason that it isn’t an update is because I’m not actually the person who wrote the first version of this extension, so I don’t have access to the private key necessary to update it.

  10. Armstrong says:

Maybe improve the load speed, if that’s possible.

I don’t know, this extension is just perfect for me xD, just the low-speed… but very nice work dude! =)

  11. lemulot says:

    Nice upgrade.
Can you add quick link to facebook home ?

  12. Mike says:

I find it really hard to believe the chrome extension framework doesn’t support asynchronous JS… Does it support loading html inside these pop-ups? I would imagine it supports that, and if so, do your XHR requests utilizing that…

  13. Mike says:

HA!, I should have put this above… Why not just keep a rolling cache of the five most recent notifications that match the filter criteria? Facebook tells the extension it has updates for it, the extension loads the most recent ones, popping the older ones off the end of the array, and then updates the displayed number. That way the display would be instant…

  14. tobi says:

seems that this is pulling to often… i get logged out every hour when i enable this.. would be great if you can set the polling interval in the options

  15. Alexander_Q says:

The popup window needs to stay open, allowing you to middle click on several entries before moving on

  16. Peejums says:

Clicking the notification causes a new tab to open, even if i have a facebook tab open already. I’m a fan of pining a facebook, so it’d be nice if clicking the notification would just give that focus and open it if it’s not already.

  17. Ben says:

I think all your ideas are great!

Just want to say, thanks for this extension!

  18. Armstrong says:

I have some suggestions, I don’t know if they’re possible to do, but I can try =P

First, when you’re not logged on Facebook, the notifier shows you a “X”… but when you click on the icon, just shows you a blank list. Maybe shows the login fields, or just send you to the Facebook login page.

When you have several notifications and you click on one of them, the notifications list is closed. Can you make that the new opened tab goes on background tab and the notifications list doesn’t get closed?

And finally, an option to block the apps notifications, or something like that. I have no idea if that’s possible so is just a crazy idea for you.

I hope some of this suggestions could help, I really like this extension… make my cyber-social life easier xD

  19. Jeepers! says:

    Hey Kyle,

Thanks for this extension ‘update’, it’s been a really good update to the original.

Couple of problems though. I don’t remember this happening until recently, but the pop-down menu now has a huge scroll bar for horizontal scrolling, most of which just shows white space. At the far right end, there is a search bar. Could this be moved to the bottom and the vertical scroll bar gotten rid of or just removed altogether?

Also, the ‘home’ and ‘profile’ blue menu bar is really big and ugly and it is showing a repeated notification with a date underneath. Not sure why. All in all, there is more there now then there is in the normal notification menu on Facebook itself. Can it be stripped back down?

  20. Kyle Corbitt says:

Of general interest: I haven’t pushed out any updates to this extension since creating it, so anything that breaks is probably due to Facebook tweaking their site. I’ve created a new version of this extension, but I’m not planning on releasing it through — I’ll be hosting it in the official Chrome Extension Gallery for easier discovery and updating. I recommend that once the gallery opens (probably sometime mid-week), everyone uninstall this version of the extension and get the one from there, where I will continue development.

@Jeepers: Interesting, I haven’t run into that at all. Facebook may be in the middle of one of their redesigns which could easily play havoc with this extension. I haven’t run into this problem yet myself, but the rollouts of their new layouts often take a week or so, so perhaps it just hasn’t gotten around to my account yet. If you would be willing to open “” and then go to page > save page as, then send me a copy of the source, I can check and see whether anything has been tweaked that would cause the extension to break. My email address is kylecorbitt(at)gmail(dot)com.

  21. Jeepers! says:

    Thanks for your reply Kyle,

I think I’ll just wait until Google rolls out their own extension-hosting site and grab your new version then and see if the problem persists. If not, then no need to bother at all. πŸ™‚

  22. Ethan Wilson says:

with the new update to the homepage this extension is no longer working :-(, best chrome extension period!
