Download YouTube video in different formats: MP4 (1080p, 720p, 360p), FLV (HQ, Standard, LQ) and 3GP.
Download YouTube video in different formats. Select the desired format from the dropdown list (unavailable formats are disabled). Click on the button to save using the default video filename, or right click on the button to save as a different filename.
A properly formatted filename constructed from the video title is provided in the text box. Click on it to copy the text to clipboard, which can then be pasted into the Save As dialog box.
This is a workaround because unlike Firefox which has XUL / XPCOM, Chrome does not have API support for direct interaction with the browser.
The following formats are supported:

Version 1.2.7
Version 1.0 does what it claims. I have a suggestion for enhancement though: If possible it should only show links for formats the current video provides. I think I have seen this work in other downloaders.
you tube video down loader is better, also this one really looks worse
Maybe he copied code
This extension is quite similar to previous Youtube downloaders, but I do like the placement of the download buttons. It does not seem out of place, and it also allows the download of the newly supported 1080p.
However, I believe it can be improved by showing only the links for which is available. A 720p video should not display the 1080p link, for users would be confused. Though such an issue may be approached with a trial-and-error mindset, it poses some problems for the end user.
Funny, azkaban’s YouTube Downloader isn’t showing up though I enabled it. Hence, I’m using this one.
Yeah but yours allows video formats not available, one i use shows current formats only.
But I think this is great though for people new to this site as does all
can you add the mp3 download please?!?!?!? but the extension is very nice!!!!!
Is fashplugin still required to use this extension?
Thanks for the feedback. The updated version will only display the formats that are actually available.
Yeah, this one is less intrusive, the buttons (links) are in better position, more discrete.
Good work Nighthound
Decent Extension , but it didnt give me the option to download Mp4 from a video whereas another extension did give me that option
Nighthound, I remember a while ago there was a Youtube download extension that saved the file named according to the video title.
Can you please add that? It sucks to have video(1).flv video(10).flv in my download folder.
Thanks.
Would love to see an option to download as an MP3
+1 Gabriel’s suggestion
Kabooka, the new version 1.1 should fix that problem. Thanks.
Gabriel and Todero, I am still trying to find a solution for that. It’s not trivial because the Save as filename is based on the download link from the YouTube server, and so is determined by Chrome itself.
Ok, it certainly looks nicer now.
However, I miss the previous capability of allowing the links to be copied. I used the previous versions extensively with a download manager, due to my university’s internet not being up to par at times. Would it be possible to copy the links generated from the icon at the address bar?
In the meantime, perhaps I’ll be sticking to the previous version.
Oh no!!, the new version doesn’t work for me…, because I need the links so I can use a download accelerator.
Good point about the download accelerator. Unfortunately the Chrome PageAction popup doesn’t allow links to be actually copied.
I shall see how to fit the buttons into the UI unobstructively.
It’s working beautifully, thank you. This is truly a must-have extension.
Much better than the alternative on this website. I prefer this layout. The commands fit extremely nicely in the youtube layout.
Cheers, Night.
Nighthound, please check below and try to contact Waha, the girl who developed an old Youtube Downloader Extension that could save filename = video title.
http://www.chromeplugins.org/google/chrome-plugins/extensible-video-downloader-2-7743.html
Hope it helps.
mp3 please
Excellent extension.
The only thing that bothers me is the fact that the extension is permanently running in the background occupying memory and resources.
I know its less than 10mb but i think it would be better if the extension worked only when there is a youtube tab opened.
i installed a youtube downloader (not sure which one!) and it only works about half the time, other half i get “aw snap.” can someone tell me how to uninstall extentions? i found the files in finder that relate to extensions but i’m unsure what the *actual* extension file is, so i’m scared to delete it in case it’s a part of the extension-install framework itself.
i just need to know how to recognize what specific file to delete (ie, what does an extension file look like? it’s my only youtube extension, so if i know how extension files look, i can find it).
or i guess, what’s the path of an extension? that would work for me.
thanks. i’ll check back here later on.
ps– i don’t think it’s this youtube extension (judging by the graphic above), i think it’s another one. i’d like to try this one but i want to remove that other one first.
@iquanyin
Navigate to chrome:extensions in your URL bar, that gives the list of currently installed extensions. It can also be accessed via the Wrench -> Extensions.
Nice extension, still have to check it out, but wanted to post regarding video title problem. I use Internet Download Manager, and it doesnt use the internal title of the video, just the title of the page, that should be easy enough to implement. Even though the video is saved as “Youtube -title”, its better than video*.flv You could also extract the title from this setup easily.
WooooW, i loved this addon, this s beter than the “youtube downloader”, only because the interface is really better than yellow botoms *-*, and work perfect xD
tnxxxxx keep the great work *-*
Nighthound, any luck looking at Waha’s addon to save file name according to video title?
ALMOST perfect. I still think it needs MP3 download, ripping only the sound track.
@CaptNemo The problem is not extracting the title of the video, the problem is making Chrome change the name of the saved file. There is currently no way (that I know) of specifying what name to save the file as, unless this is written as a separate program (eg. like Internet Download Manager) instead of an extension to Chrome. When Chrome does implement additional functionality then this can be be achieved in the future.
@Gabriel I’ve talked to Waha via email, and she said her extension doesn’t change the save file name. Maybe you’ve remember a different extension?
@T.F. As of this point the extension only downloads what is available on Youtube’s servers, which are the video files in various formats. It does not actually do any format conversion, which will be required to download just the MP3.
I had hoped this would be like Firefox’s DownloadHelper, but the statement “unavailable formats are disabled” was key, since out of the 5 videos I chose at random to try with GetYouTube 1.2.6, not one worked. Each of those 5 worked fine with Firefox’s DownloadHelper. I’m not dissing the effort that went into this app, but It is not the counterpart for the functionality that you get with Firefox and DownloadHelper that I expected. Actually, DownloadHelper is about the only reason I don’t uninstall Firefox.
@those looking to get mp3 from of YouTube files, use Firefox, DownloadHelper, and a free format converter called Format Factory. Format Factory will convert most of the videos on YouTube to mp3 as well as many other audio and video formats.
Filename: saved video (on Linux, at least) is video.mp4, rather than the name listed beside the GET icon.
@Nighthound Oh sorry then.. but I’m sure there was an extension like that. Maybe it was when Chrome API allowed such a thing. Anyways I’ll keep looking for it. Your new scheme for copy+paste is nice too. Thanks.
this is better than the other one..for one, the resolution is higher…great add on
This extension was the best available but it seems to be dysfunctional for the last few weeks. Maybe some update by youtube or chrome broke it. Could the author please fix it up again? I am using chrome v4.0.295 on windows 7
So no news on extending the chrome functionality on the filename? Maybe some way of implementing a sort-of-a download manager inside the extension, with queue management and renaming? (which is the only thing keeping FF /w DLHelper on my computer btw, and I’m not the only one as i t seems…)
It’s a Great Extension Function. Thanks for Your Share!!
@Dileep: Hi, I had used it on Chrome v4.0.295 on win7 without any issues. Can you specify what exactly is wrong with it? Does the download button and the rest of the items appear on the page at all?
@Protke!: Currently Chrome extensions are meant to be lightweight additions to the browser in order not bog down the browser. So there is no current way to implement a full-fledge download manager, which is also the problem with trying to find a fix with renaming the file download.
Please include this extension on google’s official extensions webpage
@fsdfsd: I can’t put the extension on the Google Chrome Extension Gallery because it violates their TOS which prohibits extensions that allows unauthorized download of streaming media.
Thanks for your continued work on this extension, Nighthound
bullshit! goddamnit google……
btw this is the best extension
im very selective about extensions, and your’s kick ass
Nighthound,
I tried to use DAP with the extension , I managed to get the url to put into the DAP to start downloading. The problem occurs when the system gets disconnected ,when i try to resume the download DAP asks me some username and password for some site xxx.cache.youtube.com.Can you please provide that info ?
Thanks and Regards,
Varun
Well it seems to work pretty great. I like how it looks like it belongs on the page. Very good work! 5 out of 5
