ZapRedact

ZapRedact removes sensitive information from PDF documents — entirely on your device. Why local matters HIPAA, attorney-client privilege, financial compliance, basic privacy hygiene — none of these survive uploading a sensitive document to a cloud redaction service. ZapRedact runs the entire pipeline (text extraction, OCR, pattern detection, redaction, export) inside your browser. The PDF is read directly off your disk. Nothing is uploaded. What gets detected automatically • Social Security numbers (XXX-XX-XXXX, hyphenless, embedded in prose) • Credit card numbers (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover with Luhn validation) • Bank routing and account numbers • Phone numbers (US formats, with and without country code, labeled and unlabeled) • Email addresses • Physical addresses (US street addresses, multi-line) • Dates of birth and other dates • Medical record numbers, patient IDs, provider IDs • Common patient name patterns • Custom regex patterns you define What you can do • Click-drag to draw your own redaction boxes on anything the auto-detector missed • Click any redaction to reposition or resize it • Reject false positives with one click • Categorize detection types (turn off "Dates" but keep "SSNs," etc.) • Save detection profiles for repeated workflows (Pro) • Export as a permanent black-bar PDF — text underneath is removed, not just covered How private is "100% local"? The detection model, OCR engine (Tesseract), text extraction (PDF.js), and final PDF rendering (pdf-lib) are all bundled inside the extension and run as JavaScript and WebAssembly inside your browser. The extension's only network calls are: 1. Verifying your free or Pro license (sends your license key, receives "active/expired"). No file content is sent. 2. Counting redacted pages once per redaction (free tier enforcement). No file content is sent. Documents are never transmitted, copied, cached, or logged on any server. Free tier • 5 pages per month, free forever • All detection categories included • PDF, image, and text export Pro — $9.99/month or $79/year • Unlimited pages • Custom detection rules • Save detection profiles per workflow • Cancel anytime Built for anyone with a sensitive PDF • Filing or sharing tax returns, W-2s, 1099s, bank statements • Sending pay stubs, mortgage applications, or rental documents • Sharing closing documents, settlement statements, or insurance forms • Doctors, therapists, and clinics releasing medical records • Attorneys, paralegals, and QME doctors preparing exhibits • Compliance officers, accountants, journalists, and HR staff • Anyone who has ever blacked out a SSN with a Sharpie before scanning — this is the digital version that actually works.
