The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
✅ Full transcript, right next to the player: no new tabs, no copy-paste dance.
✅ Search inside the transcript: highlighted matches, jump between them, accent-insensitive.
✅ Click any line to jump the video to that exact second.
✅ Follow along: the current line highlights itself while the video plays.
✅ Copy the whole transcript, with or without timestamps.
✅ Download as TXT, SRT or VTT — the subtitle formats players actually accept.
✅ Pick the caption track: any language the video has, auto-generated included.
✅ Nothing leaves your browser. No account, no sign-up, no server of ours involved.
YouTube Transcript puts the text of the video you are watching in a panel beside the player.
It reads the captions the player already loaded, turns them into readable paragraphs with
timestamps, and lets you search, copy or export them. That is the whole tool — no AI, no
credits, no upsell in the middle of your reading.
Perfect for:
- Studying lectures and online courses
- Pulling quotes out of podcasts and interviews
- Writing notes, articles and show notes
- Translating or subtitling your own uploads
- Skimming a long video before deciding to watch it
How to use:
1. Install YouTube Transcript.
2. Open any YouTube video that has captions.
3. The transcript appears next to the player. Search it, click a line to jump, copy or download.
FAQ
Q: Is YouTube Transcript free?
A: Yes, completely. No account, no trial, no limits. There is nothing to buy inside it.
Q: Which formats can I download?
A: TXT for reading and notes, SRT and VTT for subtitle players and video editors. The SRT and
VTT files keep the original cue timing, so they line up with the video.
Q: Can I get the transcript in another language?
A: Yes, when the video has more than one caption track — pick it in the language menu. For
YouTube's own auto-translation, switch subtitles in the player itself and the panel follows.
Q: Does it work on videos without subtitles?
A: No. The transcript comes from the video's captions, so a video with none has nothing to
show. If captions are off, the panel offers to turn them on for you and puts them back after.
Q: Does YouTube Transcript send my data anywhere?
A: No. It does not talk to any server except youtube.com, which your browser is already
talking to. There is no account, no analytics and no tracking. You can verify it in the
permissions: the only site it may access is youtube.com.
Q: Will it slow YouTube down?
A: No. It reads the caption file the player has already requested and does nothing until you
open a video with captions.
Q: What permissions does it need, and why?
A: Two. "Storage" keeps your settings — timestamps on or off, follow-playback on or off — on
your own device. Access to youtube.com is needed to read the caption track. Nothing else.
Q: Is this a YouTube transcript generator or a subtitle extractor?
A: Both names describe the same thing, and this does it: it takes the captions of the video
and turns them into text you can read, search, copy or download.
