About YouTube Fact Checker - WasThatTrue
Stop wondering if what you just heard is true.
WasThatTrue is a fact checker that lives in the YouTube player. When something sounds off, click the button, pick the claim from the transcript, and read a source-backed verdict in seconds, without leaving the video.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
HOW IT WORKS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
1. Hear a claim in a long-form video with captions
2. Click Fact-check on the player
3. Pick a claim from a list of up to five
4. Read the verdict, with real sources, dates, and a short explanation
No popups. No redirects. Free to start with a Google sign-in, no credit card.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHAT YOU GET
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✅ An answer in seconds
✅ Every source listed with publication, headline, and date
✅ Four honest outcomes: TRUE, FALSE, CONTESTED, UNVERIFIABLE
✅ Runs only when you click, with no background tracking and no stored history
✅ A free plan to start, and a Pro plan for heavier use
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
FOUR VERDICT TYPES
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Most tools force every statement into True or False. Real life isn't always like that, and WasThatTrue says so.
✅ TRUE, it holds up against the evidence.
❌ FALSE, it contradicts what reliable sources say.
⚠️ CONTESTED, the evidence is mixed and the answer depends on context. You see the trade-offs, not a forced binary.
🔍 UNVERIFIABLE, there's no primary source either way. You decide what to make of it.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHEN TO USE IT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Use it when a statistic in an interview sounds too neat, when an explainer cites a study you have never heard of, or any time something sounds slightly off and you want a second opinion before you repeat it.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
PRIVACY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WasThatTrue only runs when you click the button. It does not watch your YouTube activity in the background.
Each check leaves a short operational record (video ID, a one-way hash of the text you checked, timing) used only for usage counting. Neither the result nor the wording of what you checked is stored.
What the extension can access, and why:
• The page you are watching, to read the transcript when you click the button.
• Your Google sign-in, to apply your plan and daily allowance.
• Local browser storage, to remember your sign-in, button position, and recent results.
It does not read your other tabs or your browsing history.
