The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About yabt Reading Assistant
Reading in a language you are still learning means constant micro-interruptions: copy the word, switch tabs, search, come back, find your place again. yabt removes that loop. Hold Shift, hover a word, and the definition appears beside it — usually in under a tenth of a second, from a dictionary stored on your own device.
WHAT IT DOES
• Instant hover lookup — Hold Shift (configurable to Alt or Ctrl) and hover any word. English, French, Japanese, Spanish, German and Korean are supported. Inflected forms are restored to their dictionary form, including Japanese conjugation (食べさせられた → 食べる) with kana readings, Korean particle stripping, and German capitalised nouns.
• Ask only when you are stuck — Press E while the bubble is open, or select a passage and press Alt+E, and yabt sends that word or selection together with the surrounding context to explain what it means here, not in general. Answers stream in beside the text.
• Paragraph translation — Translated text appears below the source paragraph instead of covering what you were reading.
• Voice questions — Press Alt+S, ask out loud, and get an answer that already knows what you are reading. Misheard? Click the transcript, fix it, press Enter.
• Hear it, then hear yourself — Word audio and full-sentence speech, with 0.75× slow playback. Press R to record yourself and compare against the reference take. Shadowing recordings stay in memory and are never uploaded.
• Built-in PDF reader — Every feature above works on PDFs, including files with no extension.
• Words you looked up before resurface with a faint mark, so you can see what is actually sticking.
• The interface and AI answers follow your native language — 14 are available.
FREE, WITH NO ACCOUNT
Local dictionaries, inflection restoration, faint marks, word audio, shadowing and the PDF reader are free forever and work offline once a language pack is downloaded. No account needed.
Sign in with an email code to get 200 lifetime AI requests and a sentence-speech preview. Pro ($6.99/month or $49/year) covers context explanations, paragraph translation, voice questions and high-quality sentence speech under fair daily use.
DESIGNED NOT TO INTERRUPT
Local lookup never uploads page text. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you explicitly ask for an explanation, a translation, or speech. Every overlay closes three ways — the × button, Esc, or a click outside. Before any sound plays for the first time, yabt asks once and lets you set the volume.
