About Woodshed
🎵 Make the song your practice space.
Woodshed adds music practice tools to YouTube so you can sing, play along and work through the parts you want to learn. Pick a song, choose how you want to practice, and keep using the video's play and pause controls.
Free to use. No subscription, no credits, and no paid features.
🎸 MAKE ROOM FOR YOUR PART
Create a backing track by removing vocals or instruments such as guitar, piano, bass or drums. Tap a part to take it out, and tap again to bring it back. Adjust the overall volume or mute the whole mix without changing your instrument choices.
🎤 SING IT YOURSELF
Use Karaoke to remove the vocals. Music and vocals have separate volume and mute controls, so you can bring the original voice back as a guide.
🎚️ HEAR THE DETAILS
Open Stems to adjust each separated part individually. Use volume, mute and solo controls to focus on a part or build your own practice mix.
🔁 WORK THROUGH THE TRICKY BIT
Choose an A–B section and repeat it. Slow the song down, adjust its key, and practice at a pace and pitch that suit you. Control playback directly beside the loop controls. Looping, speed and transpose do not require stem separation.
📍 SAVE THE PARTS YOU WANT TO PRACTICE
Create sections with your own names, such as “Verse 1,” “Chorus” or “Solo.” Each section saves its exact boundaries, speed, key and mix for that song and practice mode. Sections appear beneath the waveform, aligned with the song. Select one to set its loop and jump to its start, or use Practice to repeat it with a configurable lead-in in seconds or bars. Rename sections or update them with your current loop and settings whenever you need.
Select multiple sections and use Play selected to hear them in song order, skipping the parts between them. Turn Loop on to repeat your selection, or leave it off to play through once. Your selection is saved for next time.
🥁 PRACTICE IN SECONDS OR BARS
Choose your timing view: seconds or musical bars and beats. Woodshed detects the song's BPM during analysis. In musical mode, the waveform shows a beat grid and you can choose loop points by bar number. Set the beats per bar and precisely align where bar 1 begins. If needed, correct the detected Song BPM without changing playback speed.
🎯 FIND YOUR PRACTICE TEMPO
Adjust the playback BPM in steps of 0.1 or use the Speed slider: both stay linked. Slow down a difficult passage or bring it up to tempo as you improve. Reset either control to return to the song's normal speed.
🥁 KEEP THE PULSE
Play a metronome throughout the song or until a chosen bar, including its first beat. Adjust its volume or mute it independently. Start with playback or at Bar 1, with an accented first beat in each bar. When using a custom start, Woodshed shows whether it falls on a beat and suggests nearby aligned start times.
⏱️ GET READY BEFORE YOU PLAY
Set a count-in in seconds or beats before playback. Musical count-ins follow your practice tempo with steady audible cues. Start at Bar 1 or choose a custom starting point. When looping with count-in enabled, each repetition counts you back in.
🪟 MOVE YOUR CONTROLS
Use Pop out to open Woodshed's controls in a separate, movable window. Keep YouTube on one monitor and your mixer on another. The window adjusts its height to the content, and you can return the controls to YouTube at any time. Keep the YouTube tab open while practicing.
Use Open in Studio to open the same song at playwoodshed.com.
🎹 FOLLOW THE CHORDS
Open the optional Chords section to view the detected chords, key and guitar or piano chord shapes. Hide it whenever you prefer a simpler player.
📝 LYRICS WHEN YOU WANT THEM
Lyrics are optional and never start processing automatically. Request them when you need them, stop processing at any time, scroll through the text, or tap a line to jump to that part. Timing and lyric speed controls let you fine-tune synchronization, with corrections saved for the song.
💾 COME BACK AND KEEP PRACTICING
Saved analyses are reused when they cover the part you want to practice. Your practice settings and named sections are remembered locally, including speed, key, timing mode, count-in, practice lead-in, Song BPM corrections and the start of bar 1. Saved songs show whether you practice in seconds or BPM. Use Reanalyse when you want to regenerate an existing analysis.
📤 SHARE YOUR PRACTICE SETUP
Export a YouTube song's configuration from your library and share the file with someone else. Import restores its practice settings and named sections, so another musician can use the same setup. Audio and analyses are not included; any required analysis runs locally on the recipient's computer. Import replaces the song's current settings while keeping existing local analyses. Configuration sharing is currently available for YouTube songs only.
💻 ON YOUR DEVICE
Audio separation, chord detection, BPM detection and lyric recognition run on your computer. Audio is not sent to a transcription or separation service.
Before you start
• Audio separation requires WebGPU support in Chrome and compatible hardware.
• Processing time and memory use depend on the song, your computer and the selected feature. Lyrics may take a few minutes and temporarily slow down your computer.
• Instrument separation, BPM, chords and lyrics are estimated automatically. Results vary by recording and may contain errors.
• The musical grid uses a steady tempo. Songs with tempo changes may drift from the grid.
