About WhenNew: Find Original Car MSRP Price
See what a used vehicle cost when it was new, right on the dealer listing.
WhenNew adds original MSRP and price context directly to supported used-vehicle listings. When it recognizes a supported car, truck, SUV, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle, a small WhenNew icon appears beside the vehicle name.
Open the icon to see what that vehicle cost when new and how its current asking price compares.
There are no extra tabs to open, no VIN to copy into another pricing site, and no account required. Browse dealer listings normally and WhenNew adds the historical price context beside the vehicle.
See the price behind the listing
A vehicle’s asking price tells you what it costs today. WhenNew helps show where that number started.
Depending on the vehicle and the information available on the listing, WhenNew can show:
• Original or base MSRP
• The difference between MSRP and the current asking price
• The percentage below or above MSRP
• The percentage of MSRP the vehicle has retained
• Vehicle age
• Annualized change from the original MSRP to the current asking price
• An optional inflation-adjusted MSRP
• An exact configuration match or a possible MSRP range
For example:
2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE
Asking price: $23,995
Base MSRP when new: $28,700
$4,705 or 16.4% lower today
If a dealer listing says “Call for price,” “Get ePrice,” or otherwise hides the current asking price, WhenNew can still show the historical MSRP when enough vehicle information is available.
The comparison is intended to provide context. Original MSRP is not a used-vehicle valuation, a prediction of future value, or a guarantee that the asking price is fair.
Match the vehicle configuration
The same model can have very different original prices depending on its configuration.
WhenNew examines the information available on the listing, including the year, make, model, trim, drivetrain, body style, cab, bed length, engine, transmission, battery, and other available details. It compares that information with its built-in historical MSRP database.
Results are labeled according to how specific the match is:
• Exact match means enough information is available to identify the relevant configuration.
• Partial match means some configuration information is missing.
• MSRP range means several valid configurations remain possible.
• Unavailable means there is not enough reliable information to provide a price.
WhenNew does not turn an uncertain match into a made-up exact MSRP.
If the detected vehicle is wrong or incomplete, you can choose another configuration or use “Wrong vehicle?” to select the correct year, make, and model.
Look up vehicles without a listing
You do not have to be on a dealer listing to use WhenNew.
Open the extension and choose “Look up a vehicle” to search the built-in database by year, make, and model. This is useful when researching a vehicle before visiting a dealership, comparing several model years, or checking the original price of a vehicle you already own.
The companion website at whennew.site provides the same kind of historical pricing lookup without requiring an extension installation. Search by year, make, and model, then review the available configurations and original prices.
More than 28,000 historical MSRP records
WhenNew includes more than 28,000 source-backed MSRP records covering the U.S. vehicle market, with primary coverage spanning model years 1995 through 2026.
Coverage includes:
• Gasoline and diesel vehicles
• Hybrids
• Plug-in hybrids
• Electric vehicles
In the current database, more than 97% of in-scope model years have either exact configuration pricing or a verified complete MSRP range.
When only a range can be established, WhenNew displays a range. It does not present one end of the range as an exact price.
The MSRP database is bundled with the extension and loaded locally in small partitions as needed. Some vehicles and configurations may still be unavailable, and WhenNew will say so instead of guessing.
Compare prices across years
WhenNew includes an optional inflation comparison for U.S.-dollar prices.
Highlight a U.S.-dollar amount on a webpage, right-click, and choose the WhenNew comparison option to see what that amount represented in another year. The calculation uses bundled U.S. CPI-U data.
For example:
$33,699 today
would have been approximately $26,119 in 2020
This feature runs only when you explicitly choose it. WhenNew does not scan ordinary webpages looking for unrelated prices.
Designed to stay out of the way
WhenNew does not replace or rearrange a dealer’s listing. It adds a small icon beside supported vehicle titles.
You can:
• Hover or focus on the icon for a quick view
• Click the icon to keep the information open
• Press Escape to dismiss the panel
• Expand the panel for configuration and pricing details
• Choose a different configuration when the detected match is incomplete
You can also control:
• Whether WhenNew appears on inventory and search-result pages
• How much pricing information is shown by default
• Which price-summary format you prefer
• Whether inflation-adjusted pricing appears
• Which websites WhenNew should pause on
• Whether to keep a local list of vehicles with missing MSRP data
• Whether the extension follows your light or dark appearance preference
The optional missing-price list is off by default. If enabled, it stores only the vehicle’s year, make, model, and encounter count on your device. It does not save the VIN, listing URL, asking price, or timestamp.
