The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About WebInvestigator: Web Evidence Capture
WebInvestigator captures web pages into organised cases and keeps a verifiable record of each capture. It is built for investigators, researchers, journalists, legal and compliance teams, and anyone who needs to show what a web page said and when.
It is free, with no account. Everything stays in your browser on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
HOW IT WORKS
Click the WebInvestigator icon to open the side panel. It stays open beside the page while you browse. Create a case, then capture.
CAPTURE
• The visible area, the full page, or a selected area, as a PNG
• Page snapshot: the page's HTML and resources saved as one MHTML file
• Right-click selected text, an image or a link to add it to the case
• Notes, tied to the page you were on
• Optional page-visit log while you work a case. It is off by default and stops when the browser restarts
• Keyboard shortcuts for each capture type
EVERY CAPTURE RECORDS
• The file, stored exactly as captured
• A SHA-256 hash of the file
• The page address, page title, and the time in your time zone and in UTC
• Browser, operating system, window size and zoom
ORGANISE AND REVIEW
• As many cases as you need, switched from the side panel
• Tags, key-evidence flags and a note on each item
• Search and filter by type, tag or text
• A timeline of everything in the case
• Mark up a copy with arrows, boxes, highlights, text, numbers and blur. The original is never altered
ACCOUNT FOR EVERY CHANGE
• Each case has an audit log. Every entry's hash covers the entry before it, so an edited or removed entry can be detected
• One click re-checks every stored file against the hash recorded at capture
EXPORT
• Evidence package (.zip): a readable report, every original file, and a manifest of hashes that anyone can check with standard tools
• A single-file HTML report, or a print layout for saving as PDF
• Import a package to restore a case or move it to another computer
• Verify a file: drop in any file to see whether it matches a captured item
PRIVACY
• No analytics, no tracking, no remote servers
• The extension does not run on a page until you start a capture
• Your cases live in this browser only. Removing the extension deletes them, so export anything you need to keep
WHAT IT DOES NOT DO
WebInvestigator records what your browser displayed, at which address and when, and lets others confirm the files are unchanged. It does not prove who published a page or that its content is true, and it does not decide whether material is admissible. Chrome does not allow extensions to capture browser pages or the Chrome Web Store.
UPDATING FROM VERSION 2
Your existing case is carried into the new case library automatically. The floating toolbar is now a side panel, captures are kept inside the case instead of going straight to Downloads, and every feature is free.
