About Tab Rest — Auto Tab Close
Keep fewer tabs open without losing track of the pages you want to revisit. Tab Rest checks unused tabs every minute and closes eligible pages after the time you choose.
- Start with 12 hours, choose 3, 6, 12, 24 hours or 2 days, or set a custom interval from 1 to 720 hours.
- Automatic cleanup starts off. Pin tabs, protect individual tabs or windows, and add site protection or custom site timers.
- Active tabs, pinned tabs, selected tabs, audio/sharing, loading pages and identifiable visible tab groups are protected. With page protection enabled, pages holding text you typed or edited, playing media and pages that cannot be checked are kept open. Values a site fills in by itself, search boxes and selections are not treated as drafts, and a kept tab can be closed with Close anyway.
- Keep a minimum number of tabs per window, across windows or per group. Review exact duplicate addresses before choosing which copies to close.
- Find recently closed addresses by title or URL. Browser session restore is offered only when a matching closed-tab session can be verified.
- Tab and window protection and inactivity times are kept across a browser restart when Chrome restores the same tabs; a tab that cannot be matched unambiguously starts a fresh interval instead of closing early.
- Choose local history retention from 7 to 365 days and 100 to 10,000 entries. Export/import a local JSON backup; importing switches automatic cleanup off.
- English, Español, Deutsch, Français, 한국어, 简体中文, 日本語, Português and العربية. Unsupported languages use English.
Important limits:
Reopening an address does not restore unsaved input, scroll position or navigation history. Browser session restore cannot guarantee unsaved content. All websites' unsaved state cannot be detected. Sleeping-tab cleanup is a separate opt-in and may lose input that was not previously detected; a sleeping tab with a recorded draft is kept for 7 days after its last use. Chrome internal pages (chrome://) and the Chrome Web Store cannot be inspected and are not closed automatically.
Also available for Firefox and Zen on Mozilla Add-ons.
