About SynthID Detector
Check webpage images for Google SynthID watermarks and see the result beside the image. You don't need to save and upload the image yourself.
SynthID Detector is an independent third-party extension with no affiliation with or endorsement from Google or Google DeepMind. It uses your existing synthid.com login session and uploads the image you choose to Google's synthid.com service for processing.
How to check an image
Sign in to synthid.com with your Google account in the same Chrome browser profile, then choose one of these methods:
1. Right-click an image
Choose “SynthID Detector” from the context menu to start a check immediately. If an overlay covers the image, right-click at the image's location. The extension tries to find the image underneath, including CSS background images. If it finds no image, it opens selection mode.
2. Pick an image
Click the extension's toolbar button or press Alt+Shift+D to open selection mode, then click an image. Review the “Original image” confirmation bar and choose “Check” or press Enter to upload it. “Original image” means the file used by the webpage, which may not be the largest or highest-resolution version available on the site.
3. Select an area
Drag over a visible area in selection mode. Review the “Screenshot” confirmation bar, then choose “Check” or press Enter. You can also click a canvas or video frame to select a static screenshot of the current view. The extension does not analyze video files, sequences of video frames, audio, or text.
Clicking or dragging in selection mode does not upload anything until you confirm. You can make another selection before confirming. To exit, press Esc, right-click, or choose “Cancel.” Change the default shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
Results on the page
The result card appears beside the image or selected area and shows synthid.com's result, with confidence information when available. The card also explains inconclusive results, possible editing, sign-in requirements, quota limits, and errors.
The extension checks for SynthID watermarks. It cannot identify every AI-generated image, and “SynthID not detected” does not prove an image was created without AI. It does not independently verify the service's result.
A screenshot contains only the pixels shown on screen. If the page displays an image at a smaller size, checking its screenshot may be less reliable than checking the image file. Open a larger view of the image before selecting an area when possible. Screenshot result cards also explain this limitation.
Requirements and limits
- You need an internet connection, access to synthid.com, and an account that can use the service. Checks use your account's available quota, depend on service availability, and are subject to its terms.
- Supports common raster images and automatically converts other raster images the browser can decode. Vector image files cannot be checked directly.
- Some protected or inaccessible image files cannot be downloaded. If you can see the image, try selecting an area to check a screenshot.
- Selection mode cannot pick an image file from inside a cross-origin iframe. Use the context menu inside that frame or select an area for a screenshot.
- Chrome internal pages, the Chrome Web Store, and other pages that prohibit extension access are not supported.
- Checks run one at a time. Website changes, network delays, or account restrictions may prevent a result.
Privacy
Checks begin only when you choose the extension's right-click menu item, confirm a selection with “Check” or Enter, or choose “Retry.” To complete the check, the extension temporarily handles the selected image, its source URL, the file name derived from that URL, and the service's result.
For a screenshot check, the extension captures the current tab's visible area after confirmation and crops it in browser memory. It submits only the selected region and discards the full capture without storing or uploading it. You do not enter your Google password into the extension.
The current extension has no developer-operated upload server, analytics, advertising, or persistent image/result history. Google processes submitted images under the terms and privacy notices shown by synthid.com. Submit only images you are permitted to share with that service.
