About Snip & Ask - AI Screen Assistant

Snip & Ask is a free, open source AI screen assistant. Draw a box around anything on your screen — an error, a question, a block of code, a form you don't understand — and get an answer on the spot without switching tabs or copy-pasting into a chat window. 100% FREE & OPEN SOURCE No subscription. No paywall. No hidden tiers. The full source is on GitHub. GUEST MODE Works the moment you install it. No API key, no sign-up, no configuration. Guest mode is not a trial — the daily quota is set to cover normal everyday use. Most people never need to go beyond it. AUTO MODE Available in Guest Mode. Automatically uses best available text models for normal questions and switches providers if a rate limit is reached. For difficult screenshots or low-confidence OCR, Snip & Ask can route the request to stronger vision-capable model automatically — no manual switching required. BRING YOUR OWN KEY If you want a specific provider or higher limits, paste in your own API key from any supported provider. That's it. YOUR KEYS STAY ON YOUR MACHINE API keys are stored in Chrome's local storage and sent directly to the provider. Nothing passes through any third-party server. LOCAL MODELS WITH OLLAMA Connect Ollama to run models entirely on your own hardware. Nothing leaves your device. MULTIPLE PROVIDERS & MODELS Groq, Google Gemini, OpenAI, OpenRouter, and Ollama. Each provider supports custom model IDs — if it's available through the API, you can use it without waiting for an extension update. COMPARE MODE Send the same snip to two different models simultaneously. If both agree, you can trust the answer. If they diverge, you know to dig deeper. The only real way to catch a confident-sounding hallucination. BUILT FOR QUICK USE The core use case is simple: snip, read, close. A temporary chat that lives on the page you're already on, no switching, no clutter. Switch the model or mode mid-conversation, or regenerate the last response entirely — no need to start over if the first answer misses the mark. CUSTOM MODES Save your own system prompts and switch between them from the popup. For when you have a specific context — a language, a role, a format — that you'd otherwise have to re-explain every single time. RIGHT-CLICK ASK Select any text on a page, right-click, and send it to AI directly. Same floating chat window, no snipping required.
