The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About Simple Transcript Capture
YouTube transcript download for Chrome. Save transcripts and subtitles as TXT, Markdown, or SRT. No signup, no cloud, no account.
What it does:
- Pulls existing transcripts from YouTube videos (via YouTube's official transcript API, the same one the player uses)
- Reads the captions of video players on other sites: course platforms, embedded players, any HTML5 video with captions
- Scrapes transcript content from many other webpages
- Outputs to TXT, Markdown, or SRT subtitles (Pro)
How it works:
- Open a YouTube video, a captioned video on another site, or any page with a transcript
- Click the extension icon (or press Alt+Shift+T)
- The transcript appears in the side panel. Click Save to download as TXT, MD, or SRT
Key features:
- Real YouTube transcript extraction, not OCR or speech-to-text
- TXT, Markdown export for free
- SRT subtitle export with timestamps (Pro)
- No real-time speech recognition. This extension reads existing transcripts; it does not transcribe live audio
- Side panel UI that updates as you switch tabs
Privacy first:
- No account required
- No data sent to any server we operate
- Transcripts stay on your computer
Optional Pro upgrade ($14.99 one-time):
- SRT subtitle export with frame-accurate timestamps
- All advanced features unlocked
- One-time payment
Common use cases:
- Researchers and journalists pulling quotes from interviews
- YouTubers cross-promoting videos as text
- Accessibility teams downloading captions for review
- Language learners studying with transcript next to video
- AI prompt builders feeding video content to LLMs
- Subtitle producers needing SRT for re-upload or editing
What this is not:
- This is not a real-time speech-to-text tool
- This is not a meeting transcription service
- It does not record audio
- It only extracts transcripts that already exist on the page
