About Self-Discipline · Stop Staying Up Late
Self-Discipline · Stop Staying Up Late lets you put a limit on your own browser use, and then hold yourself to it. Nothing is monitored, and nothing ever leaves your computer.
TWO WAYS TO STOP YOURSELF
1. Scheduled auto-close
Pick a time, for example 23:00. A few minutes before, you get a notification. At the time, the browser closes itself. An optional grace period gives you a short final window if you still need to save something.
2. Lock screen
While a lock is active, every web page you open is replaced by an extension page that covers the screen, so there is nothing left to browse. Three styles:
- Blackout: a plain black screen
- Clock: a large clock
- Message: your own text, for example "Go to sleep"
A lock can start in three ways:
- On a schedule, for example 23:00 to 07:00. Crossing midnight is handled correctly.
- After N minutes of inactivity.
- On demand, from the toolbar button.
You can add a PIN to unlock early, and optionally make the lock page go fullscreen.
WHAT IT DOES NOT DO
- No account, no sign-up, and no server. There is no backend at all.
- No analytics, no tracking, no telemetry.
- No content scripts. It never reads, changes, or injects anything into the pages you visit.
- No access to history, bookmarks, clipboard, passwords, cookies, or form data.
- Nothing is uploaded or shared. Your settings stay in your own browser profile.
DESIGNED TO LEAVE YOU IN CONTROL
This is deliberately a soft lock, and the reason is on purpose: it is a tool for people who want help keeping a promise to themselves, not a way to take over someone else's computer.
- You can always reach your browser settings and remove the extension. The extension never blocks, hides, or interferes with its own uninstall, and never disables browser settings.
- The optional PIN is stored locally in plain text. It is friction against a late-night impulse, not a security boundary, and the description says so rather than pretending otherwise.
- Every feature is off by default. The extension does nothing until you turn something on.
If you have ever promised yourself you would go to bed early and then kept scrolling, this is the missing piece: a decision you make once, in the daytime, that still applies at 1 a.m.
