The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About reddit translate
FREE FOREVER — FREE BUILT-IN TRANSLATION
reddit translate is free forever: no subscription, no paid unlocks, and no API key needed for built-in translation. Read Reddit in your language and preview translated drafts before you reply. Optional cloud providers may charge their own API fees.
FREE ON-DEVICE MODELS
• RTF translates between 20 common languages. Download models as needed and translate offline once installed.
• Text and drafts stay on your device when using RTF, with no automatic cloud fallback. Initial downloads require internet access and local storage. Automatic downloads are off by default.
• Desktop Chrome 138+ also offers free Chrome local translation for browser-supported languages.
BILINGUAL READING
• Translate post titles, post bodies, comments and supported feed title links while keeping the originals visible.
• Handle new content as you scroll or expand comments, including supported community highlights, descriptions and rules.
• Preserve links, code and common formatting. Pause translation at any time.
WRITE WITH A PREVIEW
• Translate drafts in supported post, comment and reply editors. Preview, then replace, copy or undo.
• Supports plain text, Markdown and rich-text editors. Draft changes made while translation is pending are protected from stale results.
• Never automatically publishes posts, comments or messages.
OPTIONAL CLOUD MODELS
• Presets for 12 providers, including OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and DeepSeek, plus compatible APIs and custom model IDs.
• Separate models and target languages for reading and writing; optional prompts, context, budgets and model-specific reasoning settings.
• Cloud models are optional. Bring the credentials required by your chosen provider; separate API fees may apply. No API credits are included.
• 31 interface language packs, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Language selection does not guarantee equal translation quality for every language or model.
LOCAL CONTROLS AND PRIVACY
• Settings stay in the current browser; Chrome Sync is not used.
• Cloud reading translations can be cached locally for 7 or 30 days, up to 20 MB. Disable or clear the cache at any time.
• API keys are stored locally and sent only to the model endpoint you configure and authorize. Translation requests do not pass through the extension operator's servers.
• With cloud models, enabling reading translation sends relevant page text and enabled context to your chosen service. Drafts are sent when you click Translate. Review that provider's data policies first.
ADVERTISING AND COMPATIBILITY
• The extension includes advertising placements in its panel. When translation is enabled and an active ad is available, a dismissible floating ad labelled “Advertisements · reddit translate” appears on Reddit. Dismissal persists for the same tab across reloads. These ads come from the extension, not Reddit. Clicking ads is never required to translate.
• Ads are not targeted using reading content or drafts. No impression events are sent. The backend counts ad clicks before redirecting, without storing IP addresses or user identifiers.
• Requires Chrome 120+. Designed for modern www.reddit.com; old.reddit.com, private messages and chat are not supported. Reddit changes may affect compatibility.
