About PureWord: Family Safe Profanity Filter

# PureWord Store Copy PureWord is a free profanity filter for Chrome that blocks swear words and vulgar language on every website. It runs locally in your browser and automatically replaces detected terms with clean alternatives or asterisks. It suits shared devices, work settings and family browsing where settings must stay on. It is private, fast and works on video titles, comments, search results and social posts without collecting browsing data. The extension is lightweight and runs on Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi. --- ## What PureWord Filters + Base forms with plurals and tenses, plus common disguises with hyphens, full stops and underscores between letters + Case insensitive matches with word boundaries that leave words such as class, passage and hello unchanged + Custom spellings added as exact words where cover needs to extend to spaces, repeated letters or uncommon symbols --- ## Key Features + Automatic Content Filtering: Censors terms on every website visited. Filtering starts at document idle and continues as pages change, so dynamic content that loads after the first paint is also checked. + Mask With Asterisks and Clean Replacements: Hide terms behind asterisks by default or show clean replacements instead. The clean list is maintained in a public GitHub repository, and masked mode uses asterisks that match the original word length. + Highlight Filtered Words: Optionally highlight what changed so the result stays visible. When highlight is on, filtered terms show a subtle underline and a tooltip with the original term. + Parental Control and Recovery: Lock Options with a password so filtering stays active on shared or family computers. Passwords use PBKDF2 hashing, and a one time recovery code is shown on setup. Save the code since it is the only way to reset a forgotten password. When locked, the options page stays closed and the popup toggle stays disabled, with escalating lockouts after failed attempts. + Custom Word List and Blocked Words: Add words and replacements on the Custom Replacements tab to suit household needs. Custom entries combine with the default list. Right click any word on a page and select Block this word to mask it everywhere. Blocked words always use asterisks. + Per Site Controls and URL Lists: Enable or disable filtering for specific sites from the popup or use domain lists in Options. Excluded URLs keeps filtering active everywhere except listed domains. Included URLs keeps filtering active only on listed domains. Domain matching covers subdomains so a single entry covers the whole site. + Toolbar Badge With Count: The toolbar icon shows the lifetime total of blocked words across every page. The count can be turned off in Options under Show Filter Count on Icon while the popup still shows the current page and lifetime totals. The icon turns grey on pages where filtering is off. + Context Menu and Shortcuts: Right click a selected word to block it without opening Options. Right click a page to stop filtering on that site in excluded URL mode. Shortcuts cover toggle on the current page and opening Options. Defaults are Ctrl plus Shift plus F for toggle and Ctrl plus Shift plus O for Options. + Settings Backup and Reliability: Export configuration to a file and restore it at any time from Backup and Restore. The backup includes masking style, highlight setting, badge setting, URL lists, custom replacements, blocked words and per site pages. --- ## Display Modes + Show Visual Cue On and Mask With Asterisks Off: Shows replacement with highlight and tooltip. This is the default. + Show Visual Cue On and Mask With Asterisks On: Shows asterisks with highlight and tooltip with original. + Show Visual Cue Off and Mask With Asterisks Off: Shows replacement without highlight. + Show Visual Cue Off and Mask With Asterisks On: Shows asterisks without highlight. --- ## Example + Original text: This is damn annoying + With word replacement: This is darn annoying + With asterisk masking: This is **** annoying --- ## Who Uses PureWord + Parents who want family safe browsing on shared computers + Workplaces that require professional language on internal tools and public sites + Schools and libraries that provide browsing on shared devices + Individuals who prefer a calm and comfortable reading experience --- ## Permissions Explained + Storage: Used to save settings and word lists locally + Tabs: Used to show the filtered count on the correct tab and to toggle filtering per site + ContextMenus: Used to add right click actions for blocking words and for excluding sites + Alarms: Used to check the public word list periodically + Host permission for raw.githubusercontent.com is used only to download the public list of word pairs and this request contains no personal or browsing data --- ## Privacy First + All filtering runs locally in the browser + PureWord does not collect or store browsing data and does not transmit page content to any server + The only network request is the periodic download of the public word list from GitHub, which contains no personal data Privacy Policy: https://www.getslidecut.com/pureword/privacy-policy --- ## Performance + Filtering runs in small chunks and uses idle time so large pages remain responsive + Text nodes, shadow content and same origin frames are included, with placeholder, alt, title and label text where present + Memory use stays low with a capped word cache --- ## How to Install and Start 1. Install PureWord from the Chrome Web Store at no cost 2. Open Options to choose masking style and highlight setting 3. Right click a word to block it or right click a page to exclude the site 4.
