About Paper Trail — find terms & synonyms
Paper Trail is control-f for when one word isn't enough.
Type a few words, separated by commas. Paper Trail highlights all of them on the page at the same time, each in its own color, and adds their synonyms so you don't miss the sentence that says "quick" when you searched for "fast".
WHAT YOU GET:
-Search for many words at once instead of one at a time.
-Synonyms are found automatically. Switch any of them off with a click, or add your own. Paper Trail remembers your choices.
-Hot spots show you where several of your words appear close together — the part of the page that's really about your topic. Click one to jump there.
-A count for every word, a total at the bottom, and Enter / Shift+Enter to step through the matches.
Works on long pages and pages that update while you read.
WHY IT LOOKS LIKE A RECEIPT:
Your search prints out on a small strip of paper in the corner of the page: items, quantities, total, barcode. It's easy to read at a glance, stays out of the way, and you can drag it anywhere.
YOUR PRIVACY:
-Everything runs on your computer. The pages you read never leave your browser.
-It only runs on the tab you open it on, and only while it's open.
-No account, no tracking, no ads.
-The optional "online thesaurus" (off by default) can look up extra synonyms from a free online dictionary. If you turn it on, only the words you type are sent — never the page, and never anything that looks like an email address, a number or a password.
HOW TO USE:
Press Alt+Shift+F (Windows/Linux) or Option+Shift+F (Mac), or click the Paper Trail icon. You can change the shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
Type your words, separated by commas.
Enter goes to the next match, Shift+Enter to the previous one, Esc closes.
Options on the receipt let you match whole words only, include word forms (run, runs, running), turn synonyms on or off, and set how close together words must be to count as a hot spot.
Free and open source. Works in Chrome 105 and newer. It can't run on Chrome's own pages (chrome://, the new-tab page, the Web Store) or in the built-in PDF viewer.
