About Pace Reader
Practice reading at your own pace with one word highlighted at a time in
the original web page.
Pace Reader finds the main article and guides your eyes through its words.
The surrounding sentences remain visible, so you can keep the context as
you practice. Choose a target speed from 50 to 1,200 words per minute using
the slider or number box.
FEATURES
• Highlight one word at a time in the original page.
• Adjust the target reading speed at any time.
• Pause, resume, restart, or step forward and backward one word.
• Select a passage to practice just that text.
• Follow the highlight with optional automatic scrolling.
• Add optional brief pauses at punctuation.
• See your position and estimated remaining time for the current passage.
• Keep your reading settings between sessions.
HOW TO USE
1. Open an article and click the Pace Reader toolbar icon.
2. Choose your speed, then click Start reading.
3. Pause whenever you need a break. Use Restart to begin again.
4. To practice a shorter passage, select page text and click Read selection.
Space starts or pauses when you are not typing or focused on a button or
link. Escape closes the reader. Switching tabs pauses playback.
LOCAL TEXT PROCESSING
Reading controls access text from the page you open the reader on. Page
text and the page title are used locally for highlighting and the reader's
source label. The extension sends no page text to a server. Only your target
speed, follow-highlight preference, and punctuation-pause preference are
saved in the extension's local storage. No account, analytics, or advertising.
COMPATIBILITY
Use Chrome 111 or newer. Pace Reader works with ordinary text in the main
document. Article detection varies by layout; use Read selection when you
want to choose the passage yourself. Browser-protected pages, the Chrome
Web Store, the built-in PDF viewer, text in images, embedded frames, and
shadow-root content are outside this version's scope.
The selected WPM is a target interval. Optional punctuation pauses add time,
and actual timing can vary with browser and page performance. Pace Reader
is a practice tool; it does not measure or promise improved comprehension
or reading performance.
