The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About Media Control Shortcuts
Media Control Shortcuts gives you one consistent set of keyboard controls for audio and video in Chrome. Pause, resume the last thing you were playing, seek, change speed, adjust volume or boost gain β without switching back to the tab that is playing.
π WHAT'S NEW IN 1.5
β’ Audio and subtitle language switching on YouTube: one shortcut sets both the audio track and the subtitles. Defaults: Alt+Shift+G German, Alt+Shift+E English, Alt+Shift+T Turkish, Alt+Shift+F French.
β’ A small language panel in the top-left corner of the video lets you set audio and subtitles separately β for example German audio with English subtitles.
β’ The panel shows which languages the video offers and what is playing right now, and stays in sync when you change them from the player's own menu.
β’ If a language has no subtitles, the player's built-in auto-translate is used. If there is no dubbed audio, the original audio is kept.
β’ A new Settings section to add or remove languages and choose your own shortcut letters.
π AUDIO & SUBTITLE LANGUAGE
Made for language learners: watch a video with dubbed audio and matching subtitles to hear and read a language at the same time, or keep subtitles in your own language as a safety net.
β’ One key sets audio and subtitles together. These shortcuts work right away β no Chrome shortcut setup needed.
β’ In the panel, each language has three controls: the language name (audio + subtitles), A (audio only) and CC (subtitles only).
β’ Colours show the real state: yellow means the video offers it, blue means it is playing now, pink means the subtitles are auto-translated.
β’ Add any language code (es, it, ja and more) in Settings and pick its letter, or leave the letter empty to use it from the panel only.
β’ Auto-translated subtitles are provided by the video platform and can occasionally be unavailable for a while. Dubbed audio and original subtitles are not affected.
βοΈ HOW IT WORKS
Chrome manages the keyboard assignments, so shortcuts can work browser-wide once their scope is set to Global. Open the popup to see Chrome's current assignments live, and jump straight to Chrome's Keyboard Shortcuts page to change them. Shown as "Not set"? It is still available β just assign a key whenever you like.
When you press a shortcut, the extension finds the right tab and frame, prioritizes whatever is actually playing (or was most recently active), applies the command once and confirms it worked. You never need to switch to the tab with the player.
β¨ MAIN FEATURES
β’ Pause everything that is playing, then resume exactly the last thing you were watching or listening to.
β’ Seek forward or backward β the step size is yours to set, 5 to 20 seconds, on the Settings page.
β’ Increase, decrease or reset playback speed, with extended rates up to 16x on supported players.
β’ Native volume in clean 5% steps, or scroll the mouse wheel over a video.
β’ Audio gain boost beyond 100% when a video is too quiet, with a one-key reset.
β’ Audio-track and subtitle language switching (see above).
β’ Works inside embedded frames and shadow-root players, not just the main page.
β’ Exclude any site from shortcuts, right from the popup.
β’ A quick on-screen confirmation for every action.
β¨οΈ DEFAULT SHORTCUT SUGGESTIONS
Video All Pause / Resume Last β Alt+Shift+S
Video Forward Seconds (set in Settings) β Alt+D
Video Backward Seconds (set in Settings) β Alt+A
Playback Speed Increase β Ctrl+Shift+D
Playback Speed Decrease β Ctrl+Shift+A
Playback Speed Reset β Ctrl+Shift+S
Volume Gain Increase β Alt+Shift+Up
Volume Gain Reset β Alt+Shift+Down
Volume Increase β Alt+Shift+Right
Volume Decrease β Alt+Shift+Left
Chrome limits how many shortcuts an extension can assign automatically. If yours shows "Not set", open the popup β Open Chrome Keyboard Shortcuts β set the keys you want, and switch the scope from "In Chrome" to "Global" if you want it to work everywhere. The language shortcuts above don't need this.
π NATIVE VOLUME VS. AUDIO GAIN
Volume shortcuts move the player's own volume, so its controls stay in sync. Audio gain is a separate boost for going past 100% β it is applied after the player's volume, so it never moves the player's 0β100% slider.
π PRIVACY
No account, no ads, no analytics, no telemetry, no remote code. Tab and media information is only used locally to route your command and respect your excluded sites. Everything stays in Chrome's local storage β nothing is sent to us or anyone else. The extension makes no network requests of its own.
π COMPATIBILITY
Works with standard HTML5 video and audio players on any site, including players inside embedded frames. Where a site has its own player controls, the extension uses them so the native volume, speed and menus stay in sync.
