About MaxMemory - Story Memory for ChatGPT roleplay
ChatGPT forgets your story.
A long roleplay drifts. Characters who died walk back in. Someone suddenly knows a secret they never learned. The scene resets, your character's injuries vanish, and every new chat starts from nothing, so you paste summaries and re-explain the whole plot again.
Story Memory keeps a save of your story's present, updates it as you play, and lets you pick up in a fresh chat exactly where you stopped.
📖 What it keeps
For each story you turn it on for, Story Memory keeps:
• The scene: where and when you are, who's there, what just happened
• Your character: who you play, their condition, what they wear and carry
• The cast: everyone who matters, how they stand with you, where they are
• Who knows what: secrets, and who must not act as if they know them
• Open threads: promises, plans, mysteries, consequences still coming
• Your story rules: how you asked the story to be told, kept even in a new chat
• A short summary of how the story got here; quiet details move to an archive so it never grows out of hand
You can read it any time in the side panel.
💡 How it works
1. Open a roleplay chat in ChatGPT and click "Turn on Story Memory" at the top of the chat. It reads the story once.
2. Keep playing. Story Memory updates by itself, at your 10th, 20th and 40th message, then every 40 messages. Nothing to press.
3. Once the story runs long, ChatGPT gets the story so far along with your message, so it stops forgetting.
4. When the chat gets too long or slow, click "Continue in a new chat". A fresh chat opens with the story so far and the last reply already in your first message. Write your next line and send; the new chat joins the same story.
Prefer another chatbot? Copy your Story Memory and paste it into Claude, Gemini or Grok to carry the story there.
✏️ When it gets something wrong
Say so in the chat, out of character, for example "(OOC: Mira never saw the key)". The next update keeps your correction, pinned, even if the story repeats the mistake. Every update shows what changed, and you can bring back an earlier version.
💸 Free and Pro
• Free: Story Memory on one story at a time. Move it to another story whenever you like; the story you leave is kept, it just stops updating.
• Pro ($4.99/month or $49.99/year): Story Memory on all your stories at once.
• Always free, on every story: reading it, continuing in a new chat, copying it, restoring an earlier version.
No account needed to start. Sign in with Google when you want your stories on your account or to go Pro; the stories you started go with you.
🔒 Your stories
Story Memory only reads the ChatGPT chats you turn it on for. Their text is sent to the MaxMemory server so your Story Memory is there when you come back. It is written by an AI model (DeepSeek, through OpenRouter) on providers set to not train on your chats and not keep them. We never sell or share your stories. Turn Story Memory off for a story at any time.
