About Marginalia — PDF Notes
Marginalia puts a Markdown notepad in Chrome's side panel, next to the PDF you are reading. Each page of the PDF gets its own note, and the panel follows you as you scroll: move to page 12 and you are looking at your notes for page 12.
HOW IT WORKS
• Click the toolbar icon to open the side panel.
• Open a PDF (from the web or from your computer). It is shown in the built-in viewer so that the panel knows which page you are on.
• Write. Notes are saved automatically and come back the next time you open the same PDF, even if the file was moved or renamed.
FEATURES
• One note per page, kept in sync with the page shown in the PDF. The panel's page buttons move the PDF too.
• Live Markdown rendering while you type: headings, emphasis, lists, checkboxes, quotes, tables and code blocks. Code blocks show the language, a copy button and syntax highlighting. The line you are editing stays plain Markdown. Rendering can be turned off.
• Export all notes of a PDF as a single Markdown file, with pages separated by "---". Import the file again to continue later or on another computer.
• Optional page number heading at the top of each exported page.
• Configurable file name for exports and configurable shortcuts for next page, previous page, import and export.
• On tabs that do not show a PDF, the panel is a plain single-page Markdown notepad.
• English and Japanese interface, light and dark themes.
PRIVACY
Your notes stay in your browser. Marginalia has no server, no account and no analytics, and it sends nothing to its developer. The only network request it makes is downloading the PDF you opened, from the address you opened it at.
