About LiveSub — Japanese ⇄ English Live Subtitles & Translation for Videos

Watch Japanese videos and livestreams with live English subtitles. Click the LiveSub icon on the tab and the Japanese, with an English translation, appears over the video about 1–2 seconds after it is spoken. It also works the other way: English videos with Japanese subtitles. LiveSub listens to the tab's audio and makes the subtitles itself, so it works when there are no captions at all: Japanese VTuber and game streams, anime event and voice actor broadcasts, Niconico, YouTube videos without captions, news, podcasts, online classes, webinars and browser-based meetings. Learning Japanese? See what was said in Japanese with the English underneath, and scroll back through everything said so far. • One click on the video's tab. No sharing dialog, no "Also share tab audio" checkbox • Subtitles appear over the video you are watching. Drag them wherever you like; the position is remembered • Speech recognition and translation run on your computer. Audio, subtitles and browsing history are never sent anywhere • Free, no account, no time limit • Works on any tab that plays sound, on any site • A word list for names that keep coming up, an always-on-top floating window, and a transcript download with timestamps How to use 1. After installing, click the puzzle-piece button at the top right of Chrome and pin LiveSub, so its icon stays in the toolbar 2. Open and play a video or stream in a tab 3. Click the LiveSub icon on that tab 4. Subtitles appear over the video. The first time, the speech model downloads once (about 590MB for Japanese, about 206MB for English); progress is shown over the video If it says “Click the LiveSub tab once…”, click the LiveSub tab to start the subtitles and the sound. Good to know • Speech recognition and translation run in the LiveSub tab (livesubweb.com). Keep that tab open while subtitles are showing • Machine translation: names, slang and jokes can come out wrong • Loud music or several people talking at once lowers accuracy • Works in Chrome and Microsoft Edge on a computer (not on phones)
