About Know Your Building: NYC building check
Know what you're renting before you sign.
Know Your Building adds a small card to NYC rental listings that sums up the building's public record as one concern level: Low, Moderate, High or Severe. It's based on NYC data, including open HPD violations, DOB complaints, HPD enforcement programs, housing court cases, evictions and tax lien sales.
WHERE IT WORKS
StreetEasy, Zillow and other major rental listing sites. The card only appears on listings in the five boroughs. Search results and homes outside NYC are left alone.
WHAT YOU SEE
- The building's concern level on a 1–4 scale
- The top reasons behind it, such as hazardous violations per unit or a harassment finding
- A link to the full Know Your Building report, with every violation, permit, complaint and court case
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
The extension reads only the address of the listing you're viewing and sends just that address to knowyourbuilding.nyc to look up the building. It doesn't collect your browsing history, need an account or show ads, and nothing about you is stored.
Minimize the card to a small chip with the "–" button or Esc. Click the toolbar icon to show it again.
The concern level is a heuristic summary of public records, not an inspection or legal advice.
