About Inkcharter – PDF redaction checker
Is your PDF really redacted? A black box drawn over a name often leaves the text underneath: anyone can copy it, search it or extract it. Inkcharter checks a PDF for this kind of fake redaction and lets you redact a PDF properly, on your computer.
CHECK A PDF
• Choose or drop one or several PDF files.
• The report lists the words that are still present under black shapes, page by page, and other traces the checker knows how to find.
• A file that passes is labelled "None of the problems this checker knows how to find", with the limits stated: the checker does not read scans, text under light-coloured shapes or images, or accessibility tags. Always read the visible document too.
REDACT A PDF
• Open a PDF, type a name or a number and mark every occurrence, or drag on a page to draw a box.
• "Redact and download" rebuilds each page as an image with the boxes burnt in: the text under the boxes is no longer in the file.
• Check every page: a word inside an image or a scan is not found by the search.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
• Everything runs in the extension's own pages, on your computer. Your files are not uploaded.
• The extension asks for no browser permission and does not read the web pages you visit.
• Its security policy blocks any connection outside the extension. No account, no analytics, no ads.
• PDF reading uses pdf.js by Mozilla (Apache License 2.0), included in the extension.

For sensitive work (searching patterns such as emails, IBANs and phone numbers, OCR of scans, whole folders, a redaction log), Inkcharter is also a desktop application for Windows: https://www.inkcharter.com/
