About Hilite: Web Highlighter & Notes

Highlight any text on any web page with one click, and find it again on your next visit. Hilite is a free highlighter for Chrome. Select text, pick a colour, done. Add notes, see the highlights on each page, and search your whole library. There is no account, no sign-in and no server. Your highlights stay in your browser. Features - Floating toolbar with colour dots: one click to highlight - Keyboard shortcut to highlight with your last colour - Right-click menu: Highlight, with one item per colour - Six default colours, all editable in Options - Notes on any highlight - Highlights return on reload, on single-page app navigation and when lazy content loads - Popup lists this page's highlights; click one to jump to it - Library of every page you have highlighted, with search - Copy a page's highlights as Markdown - Export to Markdown or JSON, and import a JSON backup - Undo the last highlight action with Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) - Dark mode Why it is different Highlighters that people complain about tend to lose highlights when a page changes, make you sign in before you can see your own notes, put export or private highlights behind a paywall, make shared highlights public by default, show ads, or ask you to pick a colour before you can start. Hilite does none of this: - If a page changes so much that a highlight cannot be placed, it stays in your list instead of disappearing. - No sign-in. Hilite works without an account. - Export, backup and your own highlights are free. - Nothing is shared publicly, because there is no sharing feature. - No ads and no tracking. - You can highlight straight away. The shortcut reuses your last colour. How to use 1. Select text on any page. 2. Click a colour in the toolbar above the selection, or press Alt+Shift+H (Option+Shift+H on Mac). 3. To add a note, use the note button in the toolbar, or click the highlight later. 4. Open the Hilite popup to see this page's highlights, or open the library to search all of them. Privacy Hilite has no account, no servers and no analytics, and it makes no network requests. Highlights, notes and settings are stored only in your browser. Nothing leaves your device unless you export a file yourself. Full policy: https://github.com/CodeWithBehnam/hilite/blob/main/PRIVACY.md Permissions explained - Storage: saves your highlights and settings on your device. - Unlimited storage: lets your library grow past Chrome's default storage limit. - Context menus: adds the Highlight item to the right-click menu. - Scripting: starts Hilite on tabs that were already open when you installed it. - Access to web pages (http and https): lets Hilite place highlights on the pages you visit.
