GreenTabs - Close Tabs, Save the Planet

The mission of GreenTabs is to create simple, meaningful ways for everyone to engage with climate action daily. We believe that small digital habits can have a real environmental impact when multiplied across millions of users. The Digital Carbon Crisis We often think of our digital lives as weightless and immaterial. But every click, every tab, every browser action carries a hidden carbon cost. The digital world produces more greenhouse gas emissions than the aviation industry, and that number is growing. One open browser tab emits approximately 7 grams of CO₂ per hour. For someone who keeps dozens of tabs open while working, that's equivalent to leaving a light bulb on for hours. Multiply this across millions of workers worldwide, and the impact becomes staggering. The average Chrome user keeps 11.4 tabs open simultaneously. Many are forgotten, passively consuming energy in data centers thousands of kilometers away. These "zombie tabs" serve no purpose but continue to harm our planet. Our Calculation Method We don't want you to trust our numbers blindly. Our CO₂ calculations are based on rigorous research from leading sources: Tab Energy Impact Our baseline measurement of 7 grams of CO₂ per tab-hour comes from real data: when an open tab refreshes automatically or maintains a connection, it requires power from distant data centers. This isn't theoretical—it's the actual energy footprint of browser infrastructure, measured across 448 submarine cables spanning 1.2 million kilometers globally. Source: Les Échos - "Cet article émet autant de CO2 que manger du poulet pendant un mois" Tab Lifespan Data The average browser tab stays open for 2 minutes and 38 seconds before being closed or abandoned. Our calculations account for this pattern—recognizing that many tabs are "zombie tabs" left open indefinitely, consuming resources even though no human is actively using them. Source: AboutChromebooks - "Chrome Tab Lifespan Index 2025" Our Formula: CO₂ saved = MIN(Average Tab Lifespan (sec), 158s) × Number of closed tabs × 7 grams / 300 sec We cap browsing time at 158 seconds (industry average) to ensure realistic estimates based on actual user behavior. Our Solution GreenTabs makes the invisible visible. Our browser extension transforms an abstract concept—digital carbon—into concrete, personal metrics. When you close unnecessary tabs, you see immediate CO₂ savings. When you compare yourself to the leaderboard, you feel the motivation to improve. We're not here to shame you. We're here to inform and inspire. Every gram of CO₂ saved matters. Every closed tab is a small act of environmental responsibility that, when multiplied by millions of users, becomes genuinely meaningful. Why This Matters Climate change is often presented as a problem requiring massive systemic change. And it does. But individual actions are not futile—they're foundational. When millions of people take control of their digital habits, they collectively reduce emissions while normalizing environmental consciousness. GreenTabs is our contribution to making climate action accessible, engaging, and quantifiable. We believe that if you can measure your impact, you can improve it. And if you can improve it, you will.
