About GIF Editor
GIF Editor opens a looping image on one canvas so you can trim frames, crop edges, resize and add captions, then export a new copy.
A loop that runs too long, needs a different crop, or needs a caption can be changed before sharing. This gif editor works on one file at a time. Choose a file from disk, drop it into the workspace tab, or paste it. Edit GIF content in the tab, then export a new copy.
🚀 Three steps to edit and export
1. Open GIF Editor from the toolbar. Choose one file from disk, drop it into the workspace, or paste it.
2. Trim the kept range, crop, resize, or add a caption. Pick an 8 MB, 256 KB or 128 KB target when you have a size limit.
3. Choose Export GIF to save a new copy, or Frames ZIP to keep the selected frames as PNGs. Use the controls to edit GIF frames in the same tab.
🧩 Controls for frames, crop and captions
1️⃣ Play previews the loop; the frame strip shows every frame for scrubbing.
2️⃣ Trim the kept range, disable a frame without deleting it, or reverse the order.
3️⃣ Choose the 1-to-1, 16-to-9, or 4-to-3 crop preset, or draw a custom box. It applies to each kept frame.
4️⃣ Resize after cropping, keep the ratio or set width and height separately.
5️⃣ Add outlined captions to a frame range with bundled Anton or system sans.
➤ Remove opening or ending frames when you trim gif length.
➤ Choose the dimensions you need when you resize gif output.
➤ Keep the subject in frame when you crop gif edges.
➤ Set a target file size to make gif smaller.
➤ Type a caption to add text to gif frames.
➤ Shorten the kept range when you cut gif online.
🧭 Set the edit plan
- Edit GIF frames by setting the kept range, then crop what remains.
- Edit GIF dimensions after cropping, keep the ratio or set both sides.
- Edit GIF timing with Speed after setting the kept range.
- Edit GIF captions by choosing their first and last frames.
The editor workspace opens in a browser tab. Check the edited preview before you export.
🎞️ GIF editor for frame strip and playback
- Frames outside the kept range dim to show what will be removed.
- Choose 0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 2x or 4x speed; exported delays range from 20 ms to 10 s in 10 ms steps.
- Loop forever or play once.
- Reverse the frame order.
- Disable a frame without deleting it.
To edit GIF pacing, set the kept range with Trim, then change the playback rate with Speed.
Preview timing can differ from exported timing. Browsers play source delays of 0 or 10 ms as 100 ms. Exported delays are at least 20 ms. GIF Editor uses a shared colour palette, so colours and fine detail can differ from the preview. Check the exported copy before sharing it.
📉 Pick a target file size
The gif size reducer offers 8 MB, 256 KB and 128 KB presets, plus a custom whole-number target from 1 to 51,200 KB. With a target set, the editor tries six encodes. It starts with 256 colours at full size, then tests 128, 64 and 32 colours at full size, followed by 32 colours at 75% and 50% size. It stops at the first file under the limit. The editor shows the smallest file if none reaches the target. A target file size is not guaranteed.
📝 GIF captions for selected frames
Use the gif crop tool to set the area for each kept frame. Use the caption text field in the editor to add text to GIF frames, choose a font and set the caption start and end frames. Add up to eight captions, with up to 200 characters each, then check placement before export. Crop after trimming so the box stays aligned with the frames that remain. Resize after the crop, preserve the ratio or set both dimensions. Captions can cover the full kept range or selected frames. The editor preview shows each change; Frames ZIP uses the same crop and caption plan to render PNGs.
📦 Save frames as a ZIP
The editor's Frames ZIP contains one PNG per kept frame and a frames.json file. The JSON records each PNG filename, delay, source frame index, output width and height, and loop setting. Use it when you need separate images rather than an animation. The source file is not overwritten.
❓ Questions people ask
Q: Does GIF Editor add a watermark?
A: No. The editor adds no watermark to the exported file.
Q: Can I export kept frames as images?
A: Yes. Choose Frames ZIP to save each kept frame as an individual PNG.
Q: Will the preview look exactly like the exported file?
A: Not always. Browsers may display very short delays differently, and export uses a shared colour palette. Review the copy for timing and detail.
Q: Can I set a custom size target?
A: Yes. Enter a whole number from 1 to 51,200 KB. The result shows the smallest generated file if the target is not reached.
