About Doze - Sleep Idle Tabs
Doze sleeps tabs you have not used, and unloads them from memory. The tab stays in the tab strip. Its URL does not change, and tab groups stay together. Click it again and the browser reloads the original page.
Each tab has its own timer. The default is 15 minutes of inactivity, and you can set 1 to 1440 minutes. Scrolling, clicking, or typing starts the timer over. Sleep uses the browser's own discard. Doze does not replace the tab with an extension page, so reloading the extension does not close slept tabs or break groups.
Hover a slept tab and the title starts with “Asleep · about 126 MB saved”. That figure is an estimate, not Task Manager.
Scroll position and ordinary text fields are restored when they can be. Passwords, card numbers, hidden fields, and file inputs are not saved. Online documents and canvases may not return to their in-page state.
Doze will not automatically sleep the tab you are viewing, pinned tabs, playing video (including muted video), meeting pages, unsaved forms, downloads in progress, or sites on your whitelist. The whitelist starts empty.
Chrome's Memory Saver uses the same unload. The two can run together. A tab is unloaded once, not closed. Turn Memory Saver off if you only want Doze's timer.
There is no account and no server. Settings, the whitelist, how often you opened each site in the last 14 days, scroll position, and ordinary text stay on this computer. Uninstalling the extension clears them.
Shortcuts: Alt+S sleep this tab, Alt+Shift+S sleep the others, Alt+R wake all, Alt+W add this site to the whitelist.
