The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About Browsertrail: Full-Text History Search, Tabs & Bookmarks
Chrome's history search only matches page titles. Browsertrail searches the full text of the pages themselves, so you can find a page by a phrase you half-remember from its body - not just by what it happened to be called.
One keyboard shortcut searches everything you have seen: your browsing history, every open tab across every window, anything you closed minutes or weeks ago, and your bookmarks. Results come back in a few milliseconds, ranked by relevance, recency, and how long you actually spent on the page.
The index is built and kept on your own device. No page, address or search term ever leaves your machine.
Browsertrail needs a free Syntaximos account. You sign in once to use it, and that exchange carries your account identifier and nothing else: no page, address, title or search term is ever sent.
WHY IT FINDS WHAT CHROME CANNOT
On a 7,197-page test corpus, Browsertrail returned the right page in its top five results for 90% of queries. Chrome's own built-in search managed 2.5% on the same corpus and the same queries. The difference is page text: Chrome indexes titles and addresses, Browsertrail indexes what the page actually said.
It is not a tab manager and not a bookmark manager. It never asks you to file, tag or sort anything. It finds the pages you never got round to saving.
WHAT YOU CAN SEARCH
✓ Browsing history, by page text as well as title and address
✓ Every open tab, across every window - jump straight to it instead of opening a duplicate
✓ Recently closed tabs, reopened in one keystroke, surviving browser restarts
✓ Bookmarks, by title, address, folder name or page text
✓ Optionally, the last 90 days of Chrome history, imported on request
THREE WAYS IN
✓ Ctrl+Shift+K (Cmd+Shift+K on Mac) opens a command palette over any page
✓ Ctrl+Shift+Y opens the full side panel
✓ Type "bk" in the address bar to search from the omnibox
ADVANCED SEARCH
Exact phrases, excluded words, single-site filters, date ranges, and a titles-versus-page-text toggle. Operators work inline too: site:, after:, before:, is:open, is:bookmark, in:content.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
✓ Your index is built and stored on your device, and stays there
✓ No analytics, no telemetry, no tracking, no ads
✓ Incognito windows are never recorded
✓ Banks, webmail, password managers and sign-in pages are excluded out of the box
✓ Exclude any other site, or pause memory entirely, at any time
✓ Forget a site and everything stored from it, in one action
✓ Export everything as JSON, free, always - or delete everything permanently
