The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About Better Classroom
Better Classroom makes Google Classroom look and work the way you want — your
own banners and background, a readable layout, a block list that actually
hides things, and a few secrets.
BEFORE YOU INSTALL
An account is required, and new ones start on a free trial. Signing in is what
switches the extension on. It syncs with betterclas.kstudios.games; the server
is open source, so you can run your own instead.
APPEARANCE
• Class banners — your own image (auto-fitted to Classroom's 4:1 shape), a plain
colour, or no banner at all. One for every class, or a different one per class.
• Page background — any image behind Classroom, with tint, blur and frosted
panels so the text stays readable.
• List plates — Classwork rows get a proper panel behind them instead of text
pills scattered over your wallpaper. One plate per topic, or one pill per row.
• A single assignment gets one plate behind the whole thing — title, byline and
body under one sheet — and the cards beside it turn to frosted glass so your
background shows through.
• The header and class tab bar stay opaque while the page scrolls under them,
with one pill behind the "Classroom › class name" breadcrumb.
PICTURE TO ASCII ART
• A button by every comment, post and answer box turns any picture into ASCII
art — choose it, paste it or drop it in. It is sized to fit the box and made
only of characters that are the same width in Classroom's font, so it lines
up for everyone who reads it. Adjust width, contrast and brightness, or pick
a Braille-dot style for more detail.
• Art ends with a small "made with Better Classroom" line.
• The picture never leaves your computer.
SECRET CODES
• Some things are hidden. Find a code, type it into "Have a code?" in the
settings, and see what it unlocks — some come with a badge to collect.
• Codes are given out by the server, so new ones can appear at any time
without an update.
BLOCK LIST
• Full names, one per line. Their posts and comments are covered with dark
glass — the post blurred behind it, so you can see something is there but
cannot read a word of it.
• A covered post shrinks to a single line instead of a screenful, and goes back
to its own size when you press Show.
BADGES
• While you're signed in, the name Classroom shows for you is claimed
automatically, so badges can appear beside it. Badges are visible only to
people signed in to the same server.
• Don't want that? Press Opt out next to your name in the settings panel. Your
name is removed from the server and never claimed again, on any computer,
until you press Use my name.
PRIVACY MODE
• For screen sharing, recording or screenshots: every name on the page becomes
a random English one and every photo becomes Google's blank avatar. The same
person always becomes the same stranger, so a thread still makes sense. It
changes only what is drawn on your screen — nothing is sent anywhere and
nothing is stored.
TIDY SETTINGS
• Every section of the settings folds down to one line that shows how it is
set, so everything fits on one screen.
WHAT LEAVES YOUR COMPUTER
• Runs on classroom.google.com and talks to its own sync server. Nowhere else.
• Synced: your settings, your block list and the images you upload, so every
computer you sign in on matches. Your sign-in token is never uploaded.
• Your own name: unless you opt out, the name Classroom shows for you is sent
to the sync server so badges can find you.
• Other people's names are never sent anywhere. Blocking, badges and privacy
mode all match names on your own device.
• Pictures you turn into ASCII art are never sent anywhere.
• A secret code you type is sent to the sync server to check it. One unlocked
extra rewards turning work in; once it is unlocked, turning work in sends that
assignment's ID — never the work itself, its text, files or grade.
• A bug report or suggestion is sent only when you write one and press send. It
carries your message, the extension version, your browser's user-agent string,
which options you have switched on, how many names are on your block list (the
number, never the names), and the Classroom page path you were on. Never your
blocked names, never your images.
