About VU Education Lab AI Assistant
Turn the page you are reading into teaching material, without leaving it.
The VU Education Lab AI Assistant opens as a side panel next to an article, a Canvas page, a PDF or a YouTube video. Pick a tool and it works from that source: it can summarise a text or explain it at the level of your students, draft a quiz bank with a rationale and a supporting quote for every answer, write a rubric or a set of learning objectives, or plan a seminar around the reading. You can also simply ask a question, and if you want, the assistant looks things up on the web and shows you what it searched for. Add your own documents and other open tabs as extra sources.
Every result can be refined in conversation ("make question 3 harder", "shorter, for first-year students") and copied as formatted text or exported, for example as a quiz you import straight into Canvas or as slides in the VU template. Set up a course profile once, or import it from Canvas, and every tool follows your learning objectives, level and language.
Privacy by design. When you run a tool, the text, title and address of the page you chose go to the Education Lab's own server in the EU, are processed by an AI model in the EU, and are not stored. Nothing is sent in the background. Web search is off unless you ask for it, and then sends only a few search words to Microsoft Bing, never the text you are reading. You sign in with your institutional email address and a one-time code: no password, no Google account. Results stay in a history in your own browser, together with the page they came from, and you can download your data or delete your account at any time in Settings.
The assistant is made for preparing teaching material. It does not grade students or give feedback on their work, and it does not read Canvas pages that show students' work or grades. Exported files say that they were made with generative AI.
Made by the VU Education Lab (Onderwijswerkplaats) at the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, for staff and students of VU Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC and ACTA.
