Turn the YouTube videos you enjoy into speaking lessons. Vila is a YouTube language learning tool for desktop Chrome. Choose a video chapter or caption excerpt, and Vila prepares target expressions from that content. Practise them in a real-time voice conversation with an AI coach, answer follow-up questions and review lesson feedback. All learning languages supported by Vila, including English, French, Korean and Chinese, support speaking practice. Choose your learning and assistance languages in the extension. The extension interface is currently mainly in Simplified Chinese. Start with the video you just watched After an interview, a talk or a favourite channel, open Speaking in the same sidebar and choose a chapter or clip. Vila uses the selected captions to prepare the lesson, so you do not need to copy a transcript, write a prompt or explain the video to another chat tool. Start with 3 minutes and one expression, or choose 12 minutes with three target expressions. The video pauses when the lesson starts so you can focus on the conversation. A conversation with a learning goal The coach begins with an approachable question about the video, follows up on your answers and helps you use the expressions to explain an idea and relate it to your own life. If you get stuck, it can offer keywords, sentence starters or examples. Speak through your microphone and hear the coach respond. You can interrupt while the coach is talking, adjust its speaking speed, or pause and resume. Pausing closes the microphone and voice connection; paused time does not use managed speaking minutes. See what you used and what to practise next Feedback and the lesson report show how you used the target expressions, where you needed hints and what to improve next. Feedback focuses on your answers and wording; Vila does not provide word-by-word or phoneme-level pronunciation scores. Keep learning beside the video Follow bilingual subtitles, click a line to replay it, loop a sentence, adjust playback speed or hide the translation. Highlight vocabulary by difficulty and check available offline definitions without leaving the video. Save words with their original sentences, or caption excerpts with translations and timestamps. Spaced review takes you back to the source clip. Collect useful sentences in writing templates and adapt them to your own ideas; optional AI suggestions can be accepted one at a time. Free features, AI and subscriptions Core subtitles, offline word lookup, saving, review and draft editing are free and need no Vila account. Learning data stays on your device by default and can be exported for backup. Optional sign-in and consent enable sync for selected learning data. Subscription sign-in does not automatically enable sync. Sign in and buy AI credits for managed OpenAI text assistance and speaking. No personal API key is needed. Packs are the main purchase option; monthly plans are in a secondary menu. The introductory pack costs US$1.99 for 100 credits and is limited to the first paid purchase per account. Regular packs cost US$4.99/100, US$9.99/300 and US$19.99/800 credits. Packs are one-time purchases, valid for 12 months after allocation. Standard costs US$9.99/month for 400 credits; Plus costs US$19.99/month for 900. Monthly plans are prepaid and renew automatically unless canceled. Each monthly allocation expires at the end of its Paddle billing month, without rollover. Canceling renewal does not clear unexpired credits early. No new annual plans or plan changes are offered. Existing Pro / Pro Voice contracts are honored under their original terms, without automatic conversion to credits. Credits measure personal use of Vila AI. They are not cash and cannot be transferred or withdrawn. Text and speaking share a balance, spending the earliest-expiring allocation first. Text uses server-confirmed model usage; speaking uses confirmed connection time, including both learner and coach, excluding pauses, disconnections and connection setup. Insufficient credits block new requests or stop the active voice connection without automatic overage charges. Previously saved local learning data remains available. Vila currently uses OpenAI. Changes in tasks, models or API prices may make the same task consume more or fewer credits. New rates and their effective date are announced in the extension or on the pricing page before taking effect. Balance quantities do not change and completed usage is not recalculated. If you disagree, stop new usage, cancel renewal and contact support under the applicable refund policy; this is not an unconditional refund promise. Estimates do not guarantee fixed request counts or minutes. Concurrency, input and service-wide cost limits may temporarily block new requests. Active courses are held in temporary server memory. A restart may require preparing the course again. Unconfirmed interruption time is not charged, and reports saved locally remain available. Requirements and data You need desktop Chrome, access to YouTube and readable captions in your learning language. Speaking requires an available AI service and microphone permission. Network and provider conditions affect response time. An active managed lesson may need to be prepared again after a service restart. AI sends the necessary content to the selected provider. Managed practice forwards necessary lesson text, transcripts and live audio through Vila. Vila does not save raw microphone audio; speaking reports are saved locally by default.
