It's a form of Dark Pattern exploitation - infinite scroll is worse, but not many people know that scrolling itself is the root of the problem. It works by mimicking the visual flow that usually stimulates and motivates us to move around our environment. Engagement increases from between 15-50% when UI switches from pagination to scrolling (so up to 30% time stolen...). This function disproportionately impacts neurodivergent people and children.
