About Unpack
Unpack — Understand what you're reading without leaving the page.
You're on an article, tutorial, or docs page and hit something you don't
understand. Normally you'd copy it, open a new tab, search, and lose your place.
Unpack explains it right where you are.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Select text on any page.
2. Right-click and choose "Unpack".
3. Read a short explanation in a floating pane, then keep reading.
KEYBOARD SHORTCUT
Press Alt+Shift+U to unpack the current selection instantly without opening the
context menu (default on Windows, macOS, and Linux). You can change or reassign
it anytime at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
FEATURES
• Explain in place — a concise, structured explanation (direct meaning, how it
works, why it matters, common pitfalls, and an example when useful) appears
next to your selection. No new tab, no losing your place.
• Tangent follow-ups — select a term inside an explanation to get a focused
explanation of it. The original answer stays available, and a tangent trail
lets you reopen earlier tangents without asking again.
• Opt-in page context — for tricky code, choose "Unpack with page context" to
send a small excerpt around your selection so the answer can be more accurate.
This is never done unless you choose it.
• Copy and go back — copy an explanation, or return to the original answer at
any time.
• Display settings — adjust the glass look (opacity, blur, tint, lighting) from
the extension's settings. Answer settings are fixed during the beta to keep
results consistent.
PRIVACY
• By default, only the text you selected is sent to generate the explanation —
not the page around it.
• Page context is sent only when you explicitly choose "Unpack with page
context", and only a small bounded excerpt near your selection.
• Unpack does not read pages in the background, does not collect your browsing
history, and runs no third-party analytics. Requests go through our own
backend, so the API key is never exposed in the extension.
• See the privacy policy for full details.
GOOD FOR
Source code, documentation and API references, Stack Overflow, GitHub, error
messages and stack traces, research papers, and technical articles — anything
where one unknown term breaks your reading flow.
Less searching. Less tab-switching. More understanding.
This is a beta. If something fails or an answer is confusing, use the feedback
link in the extension's settings — it directly shapes what we fix next.
