The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About TranscriptSnap
TranscriptSnap is a free YouTube transcript tool: get the transcript of any YouTube video, cleaned into readable text you can copy or download as a .txt file — with no account and no upload.
Need to turn a YouTube video into text? YouTube's own transcript comes out as a wall of two-second fragments, repeated lines, [Music] cues and timestamps. TranscriptSnap cleans it instantly: timestamps stripped, duplicate caption lines removed, sound cues gone, and the fragments joined back into real sentences and paragraphs. Then copy the transcript to your clipboard, or download it as a .txt file named after the video.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Get the transcript of any YouTube video that has captions (including auto-generated ones)
- Download a YouTube transcript as a clean .txt file
- Copy the transcript to your clipboard in one click
- Remove timestamps automatically — or toggle them back on to cite a moment
- Turn long videos into notes, quotes, summaries, articles or study material
- Feed clean transcript text straight into ChatGPT, Claude or any AI tool
PERFECT FOR
Students turning lectures into notes. Researchers pulling quotes. Writers working from interviews. Content creators studying videos in their niche. Anyone who'd rather read a transcript in two minutes than watch a video for forty.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN — NOTHING LEAVES YOUR BROWSER
TranscriptSnap makes no network requests. Not one. It reads the transcript YouTube already renders on the page you're viewing, cleans it in your browser's memory, and shows it to you. There is no server to upload to, because there is no server.
- No account, no login, no API key
- No analytics, no telemetry, no third-party scripts
- No transcript text is ever stored — the only saved setting is timestamps on/off
- Completely free, with no paid tier
You can verify it yourself: open DevTools, watch the Network tab, and use the extension. Nothing comes from it. The source code is public.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Open any YouTube video that has captions
2. Click the TranscriptSnap panel, then Transcribe
3. Copy the clean transcript, or download it as .txt
PERMISSIONS, AND WHY
- activeTab — acts on the YouTube tab you're viewing, only when you click
- scripting — reads the transcript on that page and draws the results panel
- storage — remembers one setting: timestamps on or off
- youtube.com access — the extension only works on YouTube watch pages
GOOD TO KNOW
If a video has no captions, there is no transcript to extract, and TranscriptSnap tells you so instead of failing quietly. Live streams expose a transcript only once captions are finalised. Multi-language videos use whichever caption track YouTube has selected.
