Social Media Deterrent

Social Media Deterrent is a commitment device, not a blocker. It puts real money on the line when you spend too long on social media. HOW IT WORKS • It tracks your time on 8 major social media sites. The full list is in the extension's Settings, where you can switch any of them off. Time only counts while a tracked site is the tab you are actually looking at. • Under 10 minutes a day is free. • Once your day reaches 10 minutes, the whole day is charged to your card at $1 a minute, not just the minutes over the limit. Those fees are intended for a charity you choose. • Once your day reaches 20 minutes, the whole day's fees are intended instead for a "penalty" organisation you pick from a list: one you would least like to support. That is the point. • Never more than $50 in a day. • As you get close to each limit, a timer appears on the page, followed by a short countdown with a "Leave now" button. SMART TRACKING Intentional use is left alone: • Reddit posts you open from outside the site (a link somewhere else, a bookmark, a pasted address) are not counted. Feeds, search and posts you click into from a feed are. • YouTube video pages are not counted. The YouTube home page, Shorts, the subscriptions feed and Trending are. • Facebook Marketplace is not counted. You can turn any of the 8 sites off. Turning a site off takes effect the next day, so it can't be used to dodge today's limit. Turning a site on takes effect immediately. ONE ACCOUNT, EVERY BROWSER Sign in with your email address: you get a 6-digit code, no password. Time from every browser where you are signed in adds up to one daily total, and the limits apply to that total. If you also use the invite-only companion iPhone app, time in the apps and websites you pick there counts toward the same daily total. CHARGES AND SAFEGUARDS • Nothing is ever charged until you have signed in, accepted the Terms of Service, chosen your two organisations and saved a card. Time only counts from when you sign in. • You enter your card on Stripe's secure payment page. The extension and its server never see or store your card number. • Every charge email includes a one-click link that pauses all charges for 7 days. • Changed your mind about a charge? Reply within 72 hours for a refund, no questions asked. • You can remove your card, sign out or uninstall at any time. • Charges are service fees, not donations, and no tax receipt is issued. We intend to pay an equal amount to the organisations you choose. WHO IT IS FOR A private beta for invited users who are 18 or older and live in the United States. The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are linked in setup, before you agree to anything. PRIVACY The extension checks the address of the current tab inside your browser, only to decide whether the clock should run. Of your browsing, only your total seconds per day leave your browser.
