About Signal Layer

══════════════════════════════════════════════ SHORT DESCRIPTION (max 132 characters) ══════════════════════════════════════════════ Measures web content quality on-device. Page text never leaves your browser. No API, no server, no account. Character count: 107 ✓ ══════════════════════════════════════════════ LONG DESCRIPTION ══════════════════════════════════════════════ Signal Layer — Privacy-First Web Quality Analyzer The internet is filling with template-generated content, SEO farms, and AI-expanded articles. Signal Layer gives you a fast, transparent, privacy-first tool to evaluate what you are actually reading. HOW IT WORKS ──────────── Click the Signal Layer icon on any page, then "Analyze This Page". The extension analyzes the visible text entirely within your browser — the page text is never sent anywhere, no API is called, and no server is involved. In seconds you receive: • Human Trace Score (0–100) — A single composite number. Higher scores indicate organically structured text. Lower scores reflect dense template patterns and synthetic linguistic rhythm. • Synthetic Content Signal (Low / Medium / High) — Evaluates AI-associated transitional phrase density, sentence rhythm uniformity, and vocabulary repetition. • Template Repetition Signal (Low / Medium / High) — Detects repeated phrase clusters, affiliate and commission links, and bullet-heavy layouts. • Noise Density and Atmosphere label — Summarizes how cluttered and repetitive the page feels, with a plain-language explanation of why. LOCAL MEMORY AND READING TIME ───────────────────────────── Signal Layer keeps a private history on your device so you can see how often you return to a source: • A "recent sites" strip, a Research Activity summary, and a colored toolbar badge for sites you have analyzed before. • A lightweight script on the pages you visit measures two numbers only — how long the tab was actively open and how far you scrolled. It does not read page text, keystrokes, or the clipboard. • Everything above is stored only in your browser. One click on the trash-can button erases it. MULTILINGUAL SUPPORT ───────────────────────────────────── Signal Layer works across major languages — from English and Turkish to Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, and Italian — with additional structural support for many more. Each language has its own calibrated phrase list and detection thresholds, with full support for phrase density detection, sentence rhythm analysis, lexical diversity (TTR), trigram repetition, and structural pattern analysis. The extension automatically detects the page language and applies the correct analysis — no configuration needed. The interface itself is available in 13 languages. PRIVACY AT A GLANCE ─────────────────── ✓ Page text never leaves your device ✓ No account, no API key, no analytics, no ads ✓ Your history and reading data stay in your browser and can be erased with one click ✓ Optional feedback: only if you press 👍 / 👎 under a result, that page's address, score and numeric analysis values are sent to the developer's calibration sheet — nothing is sent otherwise ✓ No authorship claims — scores describe linguistic patterns, not AI origin ✓ Academic-safe — the scoring model distinguishes formal scholarly writing from synthetic SEO content ✓ Transparent affiliate detection — separates genuine commission links from standard analytics trackers ✓ Smart caching — revisiting a page within 24 hours shows your previous result instantly Four interface themes (light, cyber, glass, ink) let you choose the look that suits you. IMPORTANT NOTICE ──────────────── Signal Layer is a heuristic statistical tool, not an AI authorship detection system. The Human Trace Score measures linguistic repetition and structural uniformity — it is not definitive proof of AI generation and must not be used as the sole basis for academic, disciplinary, or legal decisions. PERMISSIONS USED ──────────────── • activeTab + scripting — read the visible text of the current tab only when you click "Analyze This Page" • storage — keep a 24-hour result cache and your theme choice on your device • Access to http/https pages — lets the reading-time script run and lets the toolbar badge recognise the site you are on. Chrome describes this as access to all websites; Signal Layer uses it only for these two purposes and does not read page text through it. • A small background service worker updates the toolbar badge from your local history. It makes no network requests. IDEAL FOR ───────── Researchers and academics verifying source quality across languages Journalists evaluating content provenance Students assessing the reliability of sources in their native language Anyone reading web content and wanting a quality signal ══════════════════════════════════════════════ CHROME WEB STORE DASHBOARD — "PRIVACY PRACTICES" TAB ══════════════════════════════════════════════ Single purpose Signal Layer has one purpose: to measure the structural and linguistic quality signals of the web page the user is reading and present them as a local score, with an optional on-device history of the user's own reading. activeTab justification Used only when the user clicks "Analyze This Page", to access the visible text of the current tab for local analysis. scripting justification Used to run the analysis script in the active tab after the user clicks "Analyze This Page". The script runs locally and returns numeric results to the popup. storage justification Used to keep a 24-hour cache of analysis results and the user's selected theme on their own device. No data is transmitted. Host permission justification (access to http/https pages) Required so that (1) a lightweight content script can measure active reading time and scroll depth on pages the user visits, stored only on the device, and (2) the background service worker can read the address of the active tab to color the toolbar badge from the user's local history.
