About Scroll Budget
Scroll Budget gives the websites you choose a simple daily time or visit budget. Set your limits, choose how firmly to hold them, and keep the settings on your own device.
Budget a whole website, such as instagram.com, or just a section, such as youtube.com/shorts. Whole-domain rules include subdomains. Section rules apply to that path and its descendants, so a Shorts rule does not limit regular YouTube pages.
YOUR BUDGETS
- Optional positive whole minutes per day.
- Optional positive whole visits per day OR per hour.
- Enable one or both budgets for each website.
- Edit, pause or delete a rule whenever you want.
CHOOSE YOUR RESPONSE
- Warning only: a dismissible notice while browsing and counting continue.
- Deliberate override: pause and type continue to unlock only this tab's current visit. Your usage does not reset.
- Blocking: wait until the applicable budgets reset. No continue button.
CLEAR COUNTING
A visit starts when a tab enters your website or section from outside it. A new tab is a separate visit. Refreshes, navigation within a rule, and switching tabs do not add visits. A cap of three allows three entries and limits the fourth.
Time counts only on the visible active tab while Chrome is focused and not minimized, including passive viewing. Background tabs and unfocused windows do not count. Daily budgets reset at local midnight; hourly visits reset at the start of the local clock hour. Overlapping rules apply independently and each keeps its own budget.
LOCAL BY DESIGN
No account, onboarding, cloud sync, analytics or advertising. Rules and current counters stay in local Chrome extension storage. Admissions and overrides use temporary session storage; only pending limit pages retain their original return URL. Unselected-site URLs are not retained. Browser activity is processed locally for budgeting and is not sent to the developer.
You choose site access when saving a rule. If access is denied or revoked, that rule shows Needs site permission instead of claiming it is tracking. The popup puts Add this site or Manage this site near the top, alongside an Add a section action. It shows only rules applying to the current page, including overlaps. Manage all websites opens the complete settings list.
Time remaining is shown as readable minutes and seconds, with a whole-number percentage used beside the time bar. Visit budgets keep clear counts. Reset labels identify local midnight or the next clock hour, including the exact local date and time. The interface follows your system's light or dark appearance.
Scroll Budget is a personal aid, not tamper-proof blocking. Changing rules, disabling the extension, or using another browser can bypass it. Incognito and embedded frames are not supported. Navigation may briefly display a site before the limit page appears, and exceptional browser or sleep gaps can undercount time.
