The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About Retro Maps
Retro Maps overlays a retro halftone, dithered, palette-driven visual effect on Google Maps Street View. Walk through any city in a hand-painted, 8-bit comic-book style.
Optional Game Mode turns it into a low-fi survival game: avoid getting your cursor over people, cars, and other obstacles as you click through the world. Lose all four lives and you die - but how far did you make it?
Features
- Live halftone shader applied to Street View in real time
- Customizable color palette (background, shadows, midtones, highlights)
- Effect controls (dot size, crush, brightness, noise)
- On-device object detection highlights people, vehicles, and street fixtures
- Game Mode with hearts, distance tracking, and a "you died" finale
- Take Photo button to save your current view as a PNG
- Keyboard shortcuts: Space to hide menu, P to take a photo, R to reset settings
Privacy
All processing happens locally in your browser. No Street View imagery, location data, or any other information is collected, stored, or transmitted. The object detection model runs entirely on-device.
