The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About Research Threads – Side Questions for ChatGPT
Long ChatGPT answers are full of terms, equations and code you want to ask about. Asking normally means scrolling to the bottom, having a side conversation, then hunting for where you were. Research Threads removes that friction.
HOW IT WORKS
• Highlight a sentence, term, equation or piece of code in any ChatGPT response.
• Pick an action (or press its key): Explain briefly, Explain simply, Explain like a high-school student, Give an example, Give intuition, Define this, Why does this matter?, Summarize, Explain this code, Explain this equation, or ask your own question.
• The answer opens in Chrome's side panel, next to the text you were reading. Your place in the conversation never moves.
• Ask follow-ups, go deeper, or highlight something inside a side answer to explore it further.
• Close the panel and keep reading exactly where you stopped.
MADE FOR LEARNING AND RESEARCH
• Quick / Normal / Deep answers: one or two sentences, a normal explanation, or a detailed one with examples.
• Explored passages stay highlighted, with a small badge in the margin; click to reopen them.
• Mark explorations as understood and see at a glance what you have already worked through.
• Nested explorations with breadcrumbs, plus quick jumps between your questions.
• Keyboard shortcuts for everything: select text, press a letter.
• Math and code in answers keep ChatGPT's formatting.
HOW IT WORKS UNDER THE HOOD
Research Threads is not a separate AI. It uses your own ChatGPT conversation: your side question is sent to ChatGPT as a normal message, with the highlighted passage added as context. The extension then shows that exchange in the side panel and collapses it in the main thread.
