About Reading Pencil: Reading Ruler & Line Guide

Never lose your place, on web pages or in PDFs. Reading Pencil is a reading ruler and line guide. A small pencil sits under the line you're reading and moves along it at your own pace, like running a finger under the line in a paper book. Look away, look back, and your eyes know exactly where you were. It works in PDFs too, where most reading rulers can't: papers, reports and books open in Reading Pencil's own page, two columns are read one at a time, and your place is kept to the line. It is made for anyone who finds long pages hard to follow: tired eyes, a busy mind, dyslexia or ADHD, reading in a second language, or simply a long article at the end of the day. It helps you take a long page line by line, staying with one line at a time. HOW IT WORKS 1. Open an article, a story, a paper or any long page you want to read. 2. Click the Reading Pencil icon and turn the switch on, or right-click a paragraph and choose "Start reading here" to read from there. 3. The space bar starts the pencil and pauses it. It moves along the line, then down to the next. WHAT IT DOES • A line reader that moves by itself: no need to hold the mouse under the line. • Goes at your pace: slow, average, fast, or a speed you choose. • Remembers where you stopped. Open it again from "Where you left off" and the pencil is waiting on that line, days later. • Reads PDFs from the web or your computer, papers in two columns included, with page numbers and running heads left out. • Keeps to the article: skips menus, sidebars, comments, ads and the sign-up boxes set into a story. On news sites that load the next story as you scroll, it stops at the end of yours. • Shows what you've read: a small bookshelf with a book for each article. • A pencil or a plain line, in six colors, held in your right or left hand, and a soft light on the line you're on. • Works in many languages, right-to-left ones too. • Simple keys: Space to start or pause, ↑ and ↓ to go back or on a line, Esc to put it down. Click any line to move the pencil there. EASY TO LEARN A short welcome page opens when you add it: try the pencil right away on a passage written for it, or watch a one-minute video of it at work. "How to use" in the toolbar window explains everything again, any time, and "Feedback" there lets you tell me what's wrong or what you'd like. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • No account, no sign-up, no ads, no tracking. • Never uploads what you read. Your settings, saved places and reading counts stay in your browser, and nothing is kept from Incognito windows. GOOD TO KNOW • It appears only when you start it, and only on that page. • It doesn't work on Chrome's own pages, or on scanned documents (pictures of pages, with no words in them). • Shortcut: Alt+Shift+R (Control+Shift+R on a Mac) turns it on or off. Reading Pencil is a reading aid, not a medical device or treatment.
