About Read For Me: Text to Speech
Read any web page aloud, in the voice you choose, and keep every clip for instant replay.
Read For Me puts a play button beside each paragraph on a page. Press it and that paragraph is spoken in the voice you picked. Press it again and it replays instantly, because the audio was saved for that site — no waiting, and no new request.
Who it is for
• Students and researchers working through long articles
• Anyone who prefers listening to reading, or who needs to rest their eyes
• People studying a second language, who can follow the written text while hearing it
• Anyone who wants a long read turned into something they can listen to on a walk
What you can do
• Click the button beside any paragraph to hear it — playback continues with the bar at the bottom of the page
• Generate every paragraph of an article up front, so the whole piece plays back to back
• Download everything you generated as a single audio file with a matching transcript
• Turn your generated audio into a video with the transcript shown on screen
• Hide the extension on sites you would rather keep untouched
Bring your own voice provider
Use your own account with OpenAI, Microsoft Azure, ElevenLabs, Google Cloud, or any service that follows the same format as OpenAI — including one running on your own computer. Your credentials stay on your device. Nothing is sent to us.
Optional premium plan
Signing in with a Google account is optional and adds an included allowance of speech, plus:
• Voices paid for by us, with no provider account needed
• Tone detected from the writing itself, so a news piece does not sound like a bedtime story
• Language detected paragraph by paragraph, so a page that mixes languages uses the right voice for each
• Your library synced to the cloud, so it is there on your other devices — to our storage, or to your own Google Drive
• Video download with the transcript
Without signing in, every feature listed above that does not need an account keeps working exactly as before.
Your privacy
Reading aloud with your own provider account happens entirely between your browser and that provider. We do not use analytics or tracking, we do not sell your data, and we do not record the pages you visit. You can export or delete everything we hold from the settings page at any time.
Getting started
1. Open the extension's settings and choose your provider, then paste in your account credentials
2. Press "Test voice" to confirm it works
3. Open any article and press the play button beside a paragraph
