About PkgHealth - GitHub, NPM & PyPI Health
PkgHealth Chrome Extension is a lightweight browser tool designed to check the health and activity of software packages on GitHub, NPM, and PyPI.
Here is a detailed breakdown of how it works and what it does:
🔍 How it gathers information
The extension runs entirely in your browser using local DOM scraping. This means it reads elements directly from the webpage you are viewing. It makes zero external API requests. Because of this, it is extremely fast, uses no network bandwidth, and will never hit rate limits.
📊 What health criteria it evaluates
It automatically extracts dates and warnings to calculate the package health status. It categorizes the package into one of three statuses based on the last updated date:
- Healthy: Green indicator showing the package was updated within the last 6 months. It displays the text: Updated X months ago.
- Stale: Yellow indicator showing no updates for 6 to 18 months. It displays the text: No updates in X months.
- Critical or Abandoned: Red indicator showing no updates for over 18 months, or that the repository is archived, deprecated, or yanked. It displays the text: Likely Abandoned (X years inactive).
🛡️ Platform specific scraping details
- GitHub: It checks repository homepages. It scans for the latest commit datetime in the file list and checks for archive warning labels near the repository title. It injects a status badge next to the star and fork buttons in the top header.
- NPM: It checks package registry pages. It scans the page for the publish timestamp and checks for deprecation warning banners. It injects the status badge inline next to the main package name title.
- PyPI: It checks python package pages. It scans for the release time in the metadata section and checks for yanked release notices in the header or page level notification bars. It injects the status badge next to the package header title.
⚙️ Extension popup control
When you click the extension icon in your browser toolbar, a sleek dark themed card opens. It features:
- The official shield pulse logo with a green glowing shadow that turns on when the extension is running.
- An active green or paused gray status dot indicator.
- A toggle switch that lets you turn the extension on or off. Turning it off instantly communicates with your open tabs to hide and remove all injected badges from the pages.
🎨 Sleek user interface design
All injected badges and tooltips are styled in a modern dark theme matching developer tools. You can hover over any status badge to open a tooltip that reveals the exact last updated date and the detailed health status.
