About Mingo — Learn HSK 3.0 Chinese on Every New Tab
You know more Chinese than you think.
Hokkien, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese share thousands of words with Chinese, a legacy of centuries of shared writing. Mingo starts from the words you already share. Open a new tab and you get one Chinese word from HSK 3.0, the current exam syllabus: its characters, pinyin and meaning, and the same word in the languages you know, with readings and translations. Keep the card open in Chrome's side panel and a new word arrives by itself while you read the web.
The first time, Mingo asks which languages you know: Hokkien, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, any of them or none. It then tells you how much of the list you already have a head start on (95% of the words also exist in Hokkien, and 97% in at least one of the four). Then it asks which HSK level you are studying, and can mark every word below it Known, so the cards start where you are. You can change your languages and levels at any time in Settings.
For each language you chose, Mingo shows the reading of the same word, one line per language, syllable by syllable in columns that line up across the languages: Hokkien in Taiwanese POJ, Japanese in kana, Korean in hangul, Vietnamese in Hán Việt. Each reading is marked as the same word, a close relative, or a different everyday word, and when your language says it differently, Mingo shows the translation: the word people actually use.
- 10,057 words, the current HSK 3.0 exam syllabus: HSK 3.0, levels 1–9 (the 7–9 band as one level)
- study by HSK level: choose the levels, the statuses and how common the words are
- every word has 10 example sentences, with pinyin over each word and colour-matched English
- mark words New, Learning or Known
- how common each word is, from a newspaper corpus
- stroke order for every character
- a glossary of all 10,057 words, searchable by character, pinyin, meaning or any of the four languages, sorted by pinyin or by frequency, and narrowed by how common a word is or by how close it is to the same word in your languages
- progress graphs over your whole history (words, HSK level, and how much of a newspaper you can read) and a calendar of the words you learned
- a card in Chrome's side panel that stays open beside any page and changes to a new word by itself, every 10 minutes or as often as you choose (15 seconds to 1 hour, or only when you click); it pauses while your pointer is on it
- the new tab and the word page change word on the same timer, and every card shares one history, so back andforward work everywhere
- a word page for every word: step back and forward through your words, mark them, copy them, and point at anyword in a sentence to see its pinyin and meaning
- a compact card in the toolbar popup, and a larger view with the word page, glossary, progress and settings
- light theme, or follow your system's light and dark setting
- prefer your own new tab? Turn Mingo on new tabs off in Settings: Chrome's own new tab page comes back, andMingo stays in the side panel and the toolbar
