About Miguan - AI Language Learning Assistant
Miguan is a language-learning extension built around the things you already read and watch every day.
Reading a webpage, going through a PDF, watching YouTube or Bilibili? When you come across a word you don't know, a sentence you can't quite catch, or something you'd like to practice saying, Miguan lets you learn without leaving the page.
No need to switch between apps or prepare study materials in advance. The content you're already interested in becomes your learning material. Listen, read, speak, write—and gradually turn the things you learn into your own personal knowledge base.
🎧 Listen: Hear Every Sentence Clearly
Select a word, sentence, or subtitle and play it aloud with a single click.
When watching a video, you can loop individual sentences and listen to them as many times as you need. Save useful clips and turn them into your own listening practice—without dragging the timeline back and forth to find the same sentence.
🗣️ Speak: Practice with Real Speech
Turn on your microphone and repeat the original sentence. Miguan compares your pronunciation with the original and points out areas you can improve, including pronunciation and intonation.
It also helps you see what's actually happening in natural speech:
Linking — sounds flow from one word into the next.
Elision — some sounds disappear in natural speech.
Assimilation — neighboring sounds influence each other and change.
A lot of the time, the problem isn't that you don't know the words. It's that words don't sound the way they look in a textbook when people speak naturally.
Once you can see these changes, it becomes much easier to follow movies, podcasts, and English meetings—and to imitate the way people actually speak.
📖 Read: Go Beyond Looking Up Words
Select any word or sentence on a webpage to see its translation.
When a paragraph gets complicated, open the sidebar to ask questions about the content, summarize it, or explore grammar and expressions.
Reading Companion helps break down key terms, ideas, and relationships within a paragraph. Sentence Coach looks at sentence structure and shows you how natural expressions are put together.
It's not just about knowing what a word means. It's about understanding how the writer actually uses it.
📄 PDFs: Learn While Reading Papers and Documents
Miguan includes a built-in PDF reader for papers, technical documents, ebooks, and more.
Translate words and sentences, save useful expressions, highlight unfamiliar vocabulary, and use reading assistance without constantly switching between different tools.
🎬 YouTube & Bilibili: Turn Videos into Learning Material
Miguan automatically picks up video subtitles and gives you tools to learn from them:
Translate words directly from subtitles
Save words and expressions
Highlight words as they are spoken
Click subtitles to jump to the right moment
Loop individual sentences for focused listening
What started as a quick video can become a chance to practice listening, pick up natural expressions, and imitate native speech.
✍️ Write: Learn by Writing Like a Native
Found a sentence you really like? Try writing your own version.
Imitation Practice extracts the structure of an original sentence and gives you a framework to work with. Rewrite it using your own ideas, then get suggestions on how to improve it.
You can also use the sidebar to polish or rewrite your writing, or practice through situational conversations to learn how to express yourself in realistic contexts.
Going from understanding someone else's sentence to writing your own takes practice. This is where you do it.
📚 Collect: Remember Expressions You Actually Encounter
Come across a useful word or a natural-sounding expression? Save it with one click.
Miguan keeps the original context, so when you review it later, you're not looking at an isolated dictionary definition—you can see how the word or expression was actually used.
Built-in word lists include IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, and more. You can also create your own word lists.
Words you've learned are automatically highlighted across webpages and subtitles. Once you've mastered them, archive them and keep moving.
🗂️ Your Knowledge Base: Build on What You Learn
Save words, sentences, video clips, and reading notes, then organize and export them as Markdown.
Miguan works with Obsidian, so you can connect your language-learning notes with the rest of your personal knowledge base.
A sentence you come across today might still be useful months from now.
🔒 Local-First & Privacy-Friendly
Miguan supports Ollama, allowing translations and conversations to run through local models without sending your content to a third-party cloud service.
You can also use cloud models such as GPT and Gemini, depending on what works best for you.
Your reading history, saved content, and learning notes should stay under your control.
🔧 Get Started
Install Miguan → Set up Ollama or a cloud API → Open a webpage, PDF, or video → Select, listen, practice, and save.
No extra textbooks. No new study routine.
Just keep browsing the things you're already interested in—and turn the language you encounter into your next step forward.
