About Manga de Nihongo — Learn Japanese from Real Manga
Manga is the study material textbooks can't write.
Textbooks can teach you correct Japanese. Manga teaches you the Japanese people
actually read and say — the shortcuts, reactions, particles, jokes, and everyday
phrasing that make real conversations feel real.
Manga de Nihongo turns the manga you already read into a Japanese lesson. Keep
the original page in front of you, get help exactly when you need it, and build
vocabulary from words you genuinely wanted to understand.
── READ REAL JAPANESE ──
Open a supported manga reader and detect the page in one click. Text bubbles are
found and read locally in your browser, so you can study on the readers you already
use instead of copying panels into another app.
── UNDERSTAND WITHOUT HIDING THE JAPANESE ──
• Tap any recognized word for its reading (furigana), meaning, and JLPT level from
N5 to N1
• Switch between word and kanji views when a word contains characters you want to
study individually
• See grammar patterns, particles, interjections, and contractions explained in
context
• Add a translation overlay when a page is too difficult, while keeping the
original Japanese visible
• Use the side panel to work through the page at your own pace
── LEARN WORDS AND KANJI TOGETHER ──
Tap Save on a word or an individual kanji to build your own study list. Kanji
details include meanings, on'yomi and kun'yomi readings, JLPT and school-grade
tags, compounds, stroke count, and stroke-order animation where available. The
bundled reference data covers 350,000+ Japanese dictionary entries and 12,000+
kanji records, with JLPT references from N5 through N1.
Review saved words and kanji with spaced repetition, then export your vocabulary
to Anki. You learn from the Japanese you actually encountered — not from a fixed
word list or an arbitrary textbook sequence.
── REMEMBER WHAT YOU MEET ──
Save useful words as you read and review them with built-in spaced repetition.
Export your saved vocabulary to Anki with one click. Your study list comes from
the Japanese you actually encountered — not an arbitrary textbook word list.
── FIND SOMETHING TO READ ──
New to Japanese manga? Guidance on supported source sites helps you find titles,
understand where to start, and spot free or official reading options. Manga de
Nihongo does not host or distribute manga; it adds a learning layer to the readers
you choose.
── LEARN WITH FRIENDS ──
Invite another Japanese learner with your personal referral code. New learners
receive starter translation credits after they join and translate their first page,
and you can earn credits when an invited friend qualifies. Referral rewards are
subject to the program's limits and eligibility rules.
── 30 FREE TRANSLATION CREDITS ──
Sign in with Google and a new account receives 30 one-time translation credits —
enough to translate your first 30 pages, one credit per page. Detection and the
full learning toolkit are free: detect pages, inspect words and kanji, save
vocabulary, review it, and export to Anki. Already-translated pages are served
from cache and are free to read again.
── PRIVACY-FIRST ──
Detection and OCR run locally in your browser. Only the text you choose to
translate is sent for translation; manga images are not uploaded for OCR. Your
learning data stays in the extension unless you choose to export it.
Supported several Japanese manga platforms. Availability can vary by reader, page type, and region.
