About Local-Swap

Local-Swap: Instant Environment Switching for Web Developers Tired of copying and pasting URLs just to see the same page on localhost, staging, or production? Local-Swap lets you jump between environments with a single click or keyboard shortcut—without losing your path, query parameters, or hash fragment. The Problem You’re debugging a deep link like https://yourapp.com/dashboard/users?tab=active#settings and need to check the exact same view on your local machine. Normally you’d copy the URL, manually edit the domain, fix the port, and hope you didn’t drop the query string or hash along the way. It’s error‑prone and wastes precious time. The Solution Define a simple mapping once—for example: yourapp.com ⇄ localhost:3000 Then click the extension icon (or press Alt+Shift+S) on any page. Local-Swap instantly navigates you to the twin environment, preserving every part of the URL. How It Works Bidirectional rules: One mapping works both ways—swap from production to local and back again. Full URL preservation: Path, query string, and hash fragment stay exactly the same. Smart scheme inference: Localhost, .localhost domains, and IP addresses automatically use http://; everything else uses https://. “” tolerance: www.example.com and example.com match the same rule. Key Features One‑click or one‑keystroke swapping – no manual URL editing. Custom labels – give friendly names to each mapping (e.g., “Authentication API”, “Frontend V2”). Toggle switches – temporarily enable or disable individual mappings without deleting them. Import & Export – backup your settings or share team‑wide configurations via JSON files. Visual badge indicator – a green checkmark appears on the extension icon when the current site has an active mapping, so you always know when a swap is possible. If no mapping exists, a red ✕ badge appears briefly when you try to swap. Persistent storage – rules are synced via chrome.storage.sync, so they follow you across browser sessions and devices. Keyboard shortcut – Alt+Shift+S (configurable at chrome://extensions/shortcuts) for lightning‑fast swapping. How to Use Right‑click the Local‑Swap icon and select Options (or open it via chrome://extensions → Local‑Swap → Extension options). Add your environment pairs (hostnames, optionally with ports). Give each a label if you like. Toggle rules on/off as needed. On any page that matches an active mapping, click the extension icon or press Alt+Shift+S to swap. Permissions Explained activeTab – reads the current tab’s URL and navigates it, only when you click or press the shortcut. storage – saves your mappings and toggle states via chrome.storage.sync. tabs – reliably accesses tab.url and performs the tab update. No remote code, no analytics, no network requests—your rules never leave your browser’s sync storage. Why Local‑Swap? Lightweight and dependency‑free – pure vanilla JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Open source (MIT license) – audit the code, contribute, or customize it. Built for developers who work with multiple environments daily. Perfect for: Frontend developers switching between local dev servers and production. QA engineers verifying fixes across staging and live sites. Anyone who juggles multiple versions of the same web application. Get Started Install Local‑Swap, add your first mapping, and start swapping in seconds. Save time, reduce errors, and keep your flow—because the URL you care about is more than just a domain. Local‑Swap is a free, open‑source extension with no hidden costs or tracking. Your feedback and contributions are always welcome!
