About KanjiSensei - Learn Kanji while browsing

Learn kanji while you browse. KanjiSensei replaces a handful of English or French words on the pages you read with their Japanese kanji or words. Hover a replaced word to see its meaning, readings, JLPT level and a link to Jisho. - Pick the JLPT levels you study (N5 to N1) - Choose how many words to replace per page - Kanji or whole-word mode - Card language: English or French, light or dark theme - Blacklist domains where you don't want replacements - Local history of the cards you opened, per day, exportable as TSV Matching is word-for-word, without context: the goal is kanji exposure and memorization, not accurate translation. ## Changelog ### 1.11 (2026-09-14) - Word mode only matches a word's two main dictionary meanings: 歯 no longer replaces "support", 聞く no longer replaces "asked" - Interjections and conjunctions match only their headline translation: どうも is "thank you", not "much" / "quite"; さあ no longer replaces "come" / "here" - Kana-only JLPT words resolve to their common entry: これ is "this", not "hey" / "look"; いくら is "how much", not "salted salmon roe" - "so", "then", "well" ("alors", "donc") are no longer replaced (じゃ, では, だから) - Hand-curated words: "to see" → 見る (missing from the JLPT list), "goodbye" → さようなら, "thanks" → ありがとう, "sorry" → すみません - The Japanese match for the 2000 most common English and French words was reviewed. A page word now has to be the best-ranked translation of the candidates: "case" → 場合 instead of 箱, "plan" → 計画 instead of 地図, "head" → 頭 instead of 先, "sound" → 音 instead of 大丈夫, "jour" → 日 instead of 昼, "bras" → 腕 instead of 手 - More function words are never replaced: "about", "out", "even", "much", "yet", "ever", "past", "also", "while", "some"… and French possessives, "aussi", "comme", "avoir", "moins", "bien", "pendant", "selon" - About fifty hand-curated words (水, 車, 来る, 出る, 月, 駅, 畑, 必要, 顔, 色, 映画, 問題, 一緒, 寒い, 秒, 人々, 理解, 販売, サービス, ビジネス…) where the dictionary gloss was too narrow or the word was missing from the JLPT list - Machine-translated French on the N4 kanji cards fixed (頭 "tête" not "diriger", 家 "maison" not "loger", 軽 "léger" not "lumière", 顔 "visage", 好 "aimer"…) ### 1.10 (2026-09-13) - Local history: every card you open is counted per day, viewable in a table from the popup's "History" button and downloadable as TSV ### 1.9 (2026-09-13) - English verbs are matched as verbs: "to store" → 収める, bare "store" stays the noun 店 - "stored" / "storing" fall back to the verb when the word itself is not in the dictionary - Two-word glosses are now matched on the page ("ten thousand" → 万, "a lot" → 多) - Glosses with a parenthetical are reachable by their plain form ("cat (esp. the domestic cat)" → "cat") ### 1.8 (2026-09-05) - "Replace with words" mode: JLPT N5–N1 vocabulary instead of single kanji - Popover card size slider in the config popup - Popover CSS isolated in a shadow DOM (no more leaking into host pages) - Fixed missing words and kana-only JLPT rows resolving to the wrong JMdict entry ### 1.7 (2026-09-05) - JLPT levels selected with checkboxes instead of a slider - Romaji toggle and Jisho link on the card - Stop function words (the, this, of, at, …) matching kanji; never replace two adjacent words - Fixed popover sometimes hidden ### 1.6 (2026-09-05) - Toggle to prefer higher-level kanji ### 1.5 (2026-09-05) - Added JLPT N3, N2 and N1 kanji ### 1.4 (2023-07-28) - Added JLPT N4 kanji - French translations ### 1.3 (2023-07-28) - Domain blacklist ### 1.2 (2023-07-28) - Initial release: replaces English/French words with JLPT N5 kanji, hover card with meaning and readings
