The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About Iris: The eye for Japanese
Make the Japanese you love easier to understand.
Iris brings word meanings, reading, subtitles and review into a calm study space in Chrome. Start reading without an account or payment card.
UNDERSTAND A WORD WITHOUT LOSING YOUR PLACE
Start in Focus mode: point to a Japanese word to open its meaning while the page stays clear. Choose click or keyboard lookup, or Full, Adaptive and No color modes. See kana readings, optional romaji and bundled dictionary definitions. English and Spanish definition choices are available; Spanish entries can fall back to English, with the fallback labeled. Core reading and onboarding screens support English, Spanish and Portuguese. Advanced screens and Study Studio remain in English.
BRING A STORY INTO STUDY STUDIO
Import a webpage passage, paste text, or open TXT, Markdown and unencrypted EPUB files. Read sentence by sentence and return to your saved place. Choose an installed Japanese system voice for on-device read-aloud. Chrome's local Japanese-to-English translation requires a compatible browser/device and may need a model download. Dictionary lookup works independently.
STAY WITH THE SENTENCE
Open local video or audio with Japanese SRT/VTT subtitles. Add a translation subtitle track, replay or loop a sentence, adjust speed, pause after each sentence, or hide captions to listen first. Search, export or print the transcript. On compatible webpages, request the video-study panel from the toolbar. Caption availability, timing, codecs and player compatibility vary; a complete transcript is not guaranteed. Iris does not generate speech-recognition subtitles.
KEEP WHAT YOU LEARN
Save words with their exact sentence and source title in My Sky. Review vocabulary with spaced repetition, edit meanings/readings and add private notes. Keep saved sentences for listening recall, dictation or manual shadowing in Studio. Sentence practice uses a simple due schedule; word review uses FSRS. Mark words known or skipped within Studio.
Export vocabulary as CSV/JSON. With local AnkiConnect, select words, deck and note fields, preview cards and include saved context. Export Studio sentences as Anki-compatible text. Studio backups include readings, sentence practice and word choices; restore preserves existing items. Audio and images are not embedded in sentence exports.
YOUR MATERIAL, ON THIS DEVICE
Imported books, study sentences, word choices and local media stay in this browser profile unless you explicitly export them. Studio does not cloud-sync. Existing Pro vocabulary/review sync is separate. File import in Studio is limited to 10 MB and 500,000 characters; PDFs are limited to 200 pages and require Pro. Encrypted books and scanned PDFs are not supported. Iris is a desktop Chrome extension; responsive layout does not make it a mobile app.
OPTIONAL IRIS PRO
Pro adds vocabulary/review sync, Japanese drafting beside supported Gmail and Google Chat fields, Google Meet caption capture and requested analysis, and text-based PDF reading. Review drafts before inserting them; you send the message. Meet needs available captions and does not record audio. Sign in to start the existing 14-day trial without a payment card or choose Pro/Teams. Usage limits apply.
Requested writing and selected meeting analysis use cloud AI services. Optional content-free feature statistics and settings samples require consent. Japanese webpage lookup stays local. Pause Iris globally or for a site; optional Chrome automatic-translation controls include undo.
Discover, read, listen, and come back to the words that matter.
