About Highlight Define
Highlight a word. Understand it instantly.
Highlight Define shows a small card right next to any word or phrase you highlight, with:
- Definitions: part of speech, clear meanings, and example sentences
- A plain-language explanation of the topic from Wikipedia, for concepts a dictionary doesn't cover ("supply and demand", "mitochondria", "Treaty of Versailles")
- Images: photos and diagrams from Wikimedia Commons that show what the word actually looks like
- Pronunciation audio when it's available
Built for reading: textbooks, articles, research papers, class notes. No more opening a new tab, searching, and losing your place.
WORKS IN GOOGLE DOCS
Highlight a word in a Google Doc and the card appears there too.
YOUR CHOICE OF HOW IT OPENS
Click the toolbar icon to choose:
- Show the card right away
- Show a small "?" button first
- Only when you hold Alt/Option while highlighting
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
- No account, no sign-up, no ads, no tracking
- Only the text you highlight is sent, and only to public reference services (Wiktionary, Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Free Dictionary API) to fetch results
- Nothing is stored or sold
Press Esc or click anywhere to close the card.
Note: Google Docs support relies on how Docs currently works and may briefly stop working if Google changes Docs. The extension still works on regular websites.
